Fun and fascinating exploration of pressure as a force for good

I read a lot of self help books. After a while, you resign yourself to the fact that there just aren't a lot of original ideas out there. Self help authors tend to reference each other's content more than they discover and develop new ideas. Martin is the rare author that sets trends instead of following them. He takes concepts that are misunderstood and flips them on their head. Years ago, he destigmatized habits and showed us how to harness our ability to perform complex behaviors repeatedly without conscious attention as a way to design the lives we want one habit at a time. It's a powerful concept that has made a dramatic impact in my life. Every day begins and ends with a review of the habits I'm actively installing. Waking up early, going to the gym daily, saving more money, eating more healthfully--all things that used to be hard that have now become automatic.

Now Martin is back to shed some light on the concept of pressure. As he explains, pressure is neither good nor bad. It's a neutral force that can either cause you stress and failure or that can be harnessed for greater happiness, productivity, creativity, and purpose. One of the key components of ultra high achievers is their healthy relationship to pressure. They learn how to use it, when to use it, how to apply it to themselves and the people around them. While the underlying principle is easy to understand, it's the plethora of useful examples and techniques that make this book immediately actionable. Quick, fun read. You'll be nodding your head from beginning to end, and find yourself inspired and excited to bring pressure into your life more consciously and constructively. Highly recommend.

I was going through some transitions and Grunburg's words inspired me to lean into some of the pressure I was facing and realize instead of avoiding it, using it to become better. Very helpful book.

About the Author

Mark Burgess is the founder, CTO and principal author of Cfengine. For the past 20 years, he has led the way in the theory and practice of automation and policy based management. In the 1990s he underlined the importance of idempotent, autonomous desired state management (“convergence”) and formalised cooperative systems in the 2000s (“promise theory”). He is the author of numerous books and papers on Network and System Administration and has won several prizes for his work.

Not too bad. But not great either.

This is an intellectual book. I wish that the book spent more time on practical applications of promise theory. There are a number of examples throughout the book, but I found them insufficient to fully explore the ideas being presented.

Interesting, but...

This is certainly a unique way of thinking about connectivity and interaction, but if you're already familiar with enterprise architecture and good design principles, you already know a good portion of what this book aims to provide. I like the overall message of the book, and I liked the way promise interaction was described between agents, but I didn't like the vocabulary used throughout the book. The author consistently uses "big" words and complex sentences to describe simple topics, and I think a good portion of it is just hubris, completely unnecessary, and I felt it detracted from the overall reading experience.

A book that promises to change how you think in system design

There are two broad categories of technical books published by O'Reilly. The first and probably the most over represented focuses on getting engineers up and running with the latest "new thingy" aiming to change the landscape of software programming, design and operations. Docker/Containers. Microservices/Go. FP/Clojure/Scala/Haskell. Apache . These books are invaluable in improving how engineers accomplish a task within a particular domain with a particular technology. Then there are books like Mark's that look to change how we (should) actually think about problems, tackle designs and task solutions and not just in one domain or with one particular technology. This second category of O'Reilly books contains timeless gems, such as this one, offering real insight, sound reasoning and expert guidance that all engineers come to treasure, not because it helped resolved a pressing issue but because it transformed their thinking and in turn gave them the inspiration to design, develop, deploy and deliver much better managed systems with a high degree of confidence and understanding of the dynamics at play - big and small. Mark has a wonderfully natural way of communicating complex subjects in his talks and books that I've long coveted. This one is no exception. Distilling and sharing a deep and broad understanding of a technical subject, one that has been mulled over many years of research, seems to come so natural to Mark in his writings. This book does indeed live up to its title, somewhat rearranged, in PROMISING to change how to THINK in terms of SYSTEMS of COOPERATION.

In 1966, with no experience or formal scientific training, Dian Fossey left the United States and set up a gorilla observation camp in the Virunga mountains of Africa. Sponsored by Dr. Louis Leakey, the 34-year-old Fossey had embarked on a 19-year project that began as a field study of gorillas but expanded into a labor of love and a mission to protect the magnificent species from extinction. No human ever came closer to the mysterious mountain gorillas than Fossey, but as her relationship with the animals grew, her fierce battle against poachers did also. Fossey was murdered in 1985, but her legacy endures. This dramatic story of her vital work is an important record for a new generation of readers.

Grade 4-6-Gorgeous photography and a fascinating story combine to create a fitting tribute to Dian Fossey and her study of gorillas in the Virunga Mountains of Rwanda and the Congo. Frequent use of quotes from her journals and full-color photographs of the zoologist at work provide insight into her dedication to primate study and her later crusade to thwart the poaching and killing of mountain gorillas. Although the author briefly discusses his subject's family and early life, he concentrates on Fossey's recruitment by Dr. Louis Leakey and on her work in Africa, giving readers a clear understanding of her deep feelings and awe of these animals and her fight to save them. An afterword briefly describes the continued work of Fossey's Karisoke Research Center in Rwanda. Suzanne Freedman's Dian Fossey (Raintree, 1997) and Jack Roberts's Dian Fossey (Lucent, 1995) provide more biographical material but lack the stunning visual appeal of this title.

She founded the Karisoke Research Center in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda, in 1967 and spent many years observing the behavior and social patterns of gorillas, defending them from hunters and sometimes interacting with them. Many of the photos of Fossey and the gorillas are outstanding for their clarity, composition, and lighting. Although the photos of Fossey will greatly appeal to young readers, the text makes clear that Karisoke was no Eden. Matthews discusses the controversy Fossey's work engendered, the killing of gorillas by poachers, and Fossey's murder in 1985. Appendixes include a chronology, a bibliography, and a list of Web sites. Young people, particularly those intrigued by the many volumes on Jane Goodall's primate research, will find this book well worth reading. Carolyn Phelan

Matthews's first book chronicles Dian Fossey's life in full-color photographs as well as in even-handed commentary that includes the controversial aspects of her attempts to protect the mountain gorillas of Africa; she destroyed poachers' traps, shot at their cattle, and burned their camps to keep them from killing off the creatures she knew to be endangered. This biography follows Fossey's growing love of animals through adolescence and college, covering her meeting on her first trip to Africa with Dr. Leakey through whom she was able to get the position that evolved into her life's work, and perhaps to her murder. Photographs of Fossey with her beloved gorilla, Digit, help readers understand her retaliations when the animal was violently killed. Matthews also confronts readers with one of the major issues conservationists facewhich means of preserving a species are justified, given the end goal? A strong, often compassionate debut. We bought this book because my 3rd grade daughter needed to do a book report and an oral presentation on Dian Fossey and it was very helpful. It's truly a beautiful book and the pictures are just stunning. I recommend this book.
