High-Vacuum Technology - A Practical guide

This is one of the VERY few books that I'd pay $150 for. If you're limited to only one Vacuum book in your life, this is the one to have. An interesting blend of easy-to-understand technician-level information combined with enough engineering data and formulae to keep even the most severe calculator-phile happy. Mr. Hablanian was formerly the Engineering Director for Varian and so is emminently qualified to write such a book. As is fitting for the price, the production values are excellent. Crisp photos and excellent graphics. I have been pleasantly surprised to not find a single mis-spelled word or bad grammar so far. This is the book I recommend to people who have just entered the vacuum field and need a comprehensive crash course in the technology.

This book was written by one of the most knowledgeable people on the planet in the field of high vacuum systems - Marsbed Hablanian. An M.I.T. grad, and pioneer in the vacuum field, Marsbed Hablanian literally wrote the book on vacuum theory.

His former employer, Varian Vacuum Systems, put his knowledge of vacuum systems to good use. If you have any questions about conductance, outgassing, continuum flow vs. molecular flow, turbomolecular pumps vs. diffusion pumps, calculating pump down time, or which type of vacuum seal or fixture to use - you need not look any further that this book.

As a researcher in the field of vacuum technology myself, I have found this book to be a wealth of knowledge and an extremely valuable reference. Marsbed Hablanian is also responsible for improving diffusion pump operation by creating the distinctive bulbous shape of oil based vacuum diffusion pumps.

This book is a must for any library or laboratory!

Di was born in A darburg, Germany, October 6, 1847. His father, the economist, Bryno Hildebrand, was forced b)- the revolution of 1848 to seek inS witzerland freedom from political persecution. Having reached school age, the son attended the gymnasium of Bern, but did not show much enthusiasm for the abstract studies there offered to him. In 1861 his father was called to the University of Jena. The young man now showed such distinctive signs of artistic ability that he was sent by his father toN uremberg, to take a course in the art school of that city. At the end of 1867 he left Germany for a prolonged stay in I taly. The influence of the masterpieces of art accumulated in that country proved to be infinitely more beneficial to his artistic development than the school instruction which he had practically out-grown when he entered the art school. In Rome Hildebrand became acquainted with Hans von Marees, whose independence of thought encouraged the younger artist to follow his own bent. After staying in Rome a year and a half Hildebrand returned toG ermany and busied himself for some time with sculpture in Berlin. A superb translation

These stories translated in this volume by Ronald Wilks are really superb. When one compares the translation of "The Lady with the Dog" with the earlier translation by Constance Garnett, the differences are apparent. Please compare them. The Wilks translation is high quality beautiful English expression, it captures the mood and the ideas of Chekhov perfectly.

Literal translation?

I have no Russian and therefore cannot question Ronald Wilks' command of that language. However, when I compare his translation of this exchange with the Pevear-Volokhonsky translation, I do question his command of colloquial English -- or his dark sense of humor:

P-V translation:
"What time is it now?" My sister was worried. "We have to get back early, papa allowed me to visit my brother only till six o'clock."
"Ah, your papa again!" sighed the doctor.

Wilks translation:
"What's the time?" my sister asked anxiously. "We'll have to be back early. Papa said I could come and seem my brother, but only if I'm back by six, without fail."
"Oh, blow your papa!" the doctor sighed.

Great Book, Even Better Author

I've been following John Cooper for months now and luckily for me, he came into my life at a very crucial junction. I had just been released from prison, I was feeling shameful, and there was a lot of self-doubt in my life.

John never said he would make it better. He never promised anything, but he always guided me in a direction that he knew would help me. Most importantly, he took the time to offer advice and support, which not only showed his personality, but his devoted passion to the men and women he works with.

This book, along with everything John espouses, isn't just about getting women. It isn't even about women / opposite gender at all. It's mostly about finding out the core truths for YOU and learning how to overcome your own obstacles so that you can connect better with others on a deeper level. Whether romantic or not, love, compassion, and empathy are hallmarks of John Cooper's books and his life.

I'm only on the second chapter and I can honestly say that this is one of the most compelling books I've ever read. Any guy who has anything to do with the pickup world has to read this book, the points made are undeniable! Really well done.

What an eye-opener! A life changing book!

This book will liberate so many men from being stuck in trying to get laid. It opened my eyes on how I look at the world. It's not only incredibly well and understandable written (as my mothers language is not english), it's also a paradigm that goes far beyond "dating" itself. John Cooper offers a way of being (Social Heartistry) that won't only make you amazing with women but also an overall better human being. The book shows off how men (and the current dating industry) is stuck in "trying to take" from women. This creates a fear, awkwardness, shame. The fear of talking to women that currently exists in our society. John Cooper changes this forever and shows in a crystal clear way how to liberate yourself from this fear. This book changed my life already. It leads into amazing, meaningful connections with women, fulfilling sex and just effortless interactions. 5 stars from my side. It's the best, and most liberating book about dating I've ever read!

Anime watcher usps to read the source material

It was very good. This is a story I can get behind. It leaves enough unanswered about the protagonists backstory that it makes me want the next volume to find out more. I have already watched the anime, but a few of the terminology was very difficult to follow without more in depth exposition which the light novel gives and had enough extra that I'm not bored going over things I've already watched. I would recommend this to both people who have watched the anime and newcomers to the series.

Practical Tips and Exercises for Better "Life Balance"

Disclaimer: I know and have worked with Laura in the past.

I'll readily admit to being challenged over the years to find what is typically described as "work life balance" --- over 16 years of working at Amazon and Microsoft can do that to someone. As someone who just recently left MS and began to think about rebalancing my priorities, I was keen on reading Laura's playbook and see how it could help me. There are three things that I really appreciate about "The Life Balance Playbook":

1. Reframing of "work life" balance to "life" balance
This idea was the most important part of the book for me. As I read the book, I constantly kept circling back to what are my core values and what is most important in my life. While work plays a role and I derive many benefits and much pleasure, it is just not the end all for me. For some people, or at some points in life, it may very well be for you. Spending time thinking about the key motivators for me in life and then planning on how to ensure they become the priority points and can stay in balance in the short and long term has been critical for me.

2. Puts the Onus on You to Control Your Life Balance:
I intentionally noted above what Amazon and Microsoft can do to someone. While I worked at both places, I often felt less in control of my "work life" balance and ultimately always put the "life" part second to the work. As I read Laura's book, I appreciate her focus on the individual taking control. We all often fall into the trap of thinking circumstances control us and this can result in feeling helpless and with less control over our time. We often say it is our manager, the company, a project. However, it all comes down to individual choices and what we deem most important. If the most important element in your life is work, that will determine how you balance your life. If it is something else, make that what drives your balance.

3. Practical Exercises:
Laura's book provides so many practical exercises to enable you to take control and determine how to find your life balance. While no one is going to find use or even complete all the exercises, I think it is great to have a wide variety of options. As a result, you can find what most appeals to you and is most likely to incite a mental and behavioral change for you. Simply reading any "self help" book is unlikely to change behavior and finding new methods or tips/tricks to shift your behavior is critical. As Einstein said "Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." If you have a self identified life balance issue, simply reading any book, including this one, without making any material changes will lead nowhere. Try something different an there are some good ideas to try out in this book.

If you are struggling to find balance in life, Laura's book is very practical and a worthwhile investment in your self. You just might learn something about yourself through some of the exercises and be able to make changes that will allow you to find your own "life balance".

An insightful book in discovering the patterns I've made for myself and how to break them.

Whenever I think of life balance, I tend to dismiss it as something that "career women" deal with, and as a stay at home mom I don't (or shouldn't) have this problem. This book caught my eye because I have been struggling with feelings of guilt and inadequacy in my role as a non working person, and I was looking to find the life I DESERVE (see subtitle, you can see why I picked this up!). I need help creating the life I want and establishing boundaries. The exercises allowed me to personalize my particular life balance and identify my areas of stress, guilt, and imperfections. If I look at a typical day, where do I spend most of my time? Where would I LIKE to be spending more of my time?

The chapter with the most impact for me was the chapter on Dealing with Myself: the saboteur, the procrastinator, and most importantly- the HERO. Defining who I want to be as opposed to who I want to be perceived as can be very eye opening. This is done very creatively through the exercises. The "I choose challenge" helped me to give a hard look at my life. Where I was doing things I felt I "should" do when I could make them into things I "choose" to do. Example: I stress about cooking. I hate it, yet I feel it is part of my role as stay at home mom. Instead, I can choose to create simple, low stress meals and focus on the family times that my meals inspire.

I am not someone who wants to put a lot of deep thought into what I am doing, I just want to keep moving forward. The exercises were simple but really made me think about my own situation. It forced me to stop and think about what I am doing in my life that is not working.

Overall, I was looking for a book that would give me some inspiration and guidance on how to change my thinking in small ways that would make a difference in my life. This book has given me a blueprint to making the changes that I need to give myself a life balance where I can feel more productive and fulfilled.

Harry Potter is great in English and French!

I am French and I have read all three Harry Potter books in both languages, and it is just wonderful. The translation from English into French is very good because you get the same exciting feeling. Harry Potter books are masterpieces and everyone, of all ages, should read them! Remember that there are 7 Harry Potter books in all and number four is coming out this summer! I am looking forward to the other masterpiece from J.K. Rowling. I recommend Harry Potter in French and English for one and all. Lisez les Harry Potter! Ils sont fabuleux! Vous les aimerez et vos enfants aussi!

These books are wonderful translations

The translation of these books is absolutely faithful in style to the original, it loses nothing, and it's a joy to read! Sometimes, when the English doesn't translate well, the translator made up her/his own puns, in a perfectly matching style. (The Sorting Hat is called le Choixpeau in the French books, for example.) I'd say one wonderful use of these books would be to be read by English-speaking students of French of all ages, who are familar with the English version. They will learn a lot quickly and painlessly. :)

Great for learning French, even if you're at a beginner level. I was afraid I wouldn't understand much, but since I'd already read the stories in English I could pick up a lot from context. This had been a really fun way to help me learn French!

Great book for scratchbuilding

Amazing book. As a modeler of 40+ years, this book (and it's about 1 inch thick and hefty!) has a boat load of ideas on how to make your own details to spice up your diorama models. The part I like best is that a lot of them are low buck ideas anyone can do. Almost like a craft book. It covers landscaping, water, plants, rocks, terrain, making barrels and other detail hard parts. Way to much to list in a review. This book will save you money by making a lot of things yourself instead of buying them aftermarket.

This is a really good book.
It covers a lot of topics to give model builders ideas to make dioramas better/easier/faster/cheaper to achieve good looking effects/improvements..
Sure, you can find a lot of this sort of thing on the internet, but sometimes it's nice to have an "encyclopedic" reference in hand, with good examples and pictures. It's a little pricey, but well worth it.
