I love this book. Over the years I have purchased and given many copies. It is fun to read and know that our Apostles lived and traveled. I use it all the time. The info is a treasure hunt over many years. I read it and just always get caught up in the author's travels to unravel the questions. Who were these people? Did they really live? Have they affected our lives so many years later. Well worth having if you like history and puzzles and mysteries.

Accessible book from leading scholar in the field

One of the main themes in the book is the melding of nomadic and agricultural societies. According to Wink this happened all across the middle east and China and North India during medieval times. The nomads were almost always Central Asian Turks. Their horsemanship and horse mounted archery gave them military superiority over settled agricultural societies like India. Horses were hard to breed in India, and the skills required to be a good horse mounted archer took lifelong training which came more naturally to the nomadic Turks. Is this "one factor" model of medieval history convincing? I am not qualified to judge, but sure seems like a good explanation to me. Especially since India had in the past repeatedly been invaded by nomads: Shakas, White Huns, Scythians.

The Turkish elites who conquered Northern India greatly increased trade with the middle east and a transformation to a more sophisticated monetary economy. The author points out that the large quantities of gold and silver that were looted from the temples were re-struck as coins. Contrary to popular belief, there was no large scale population impact (either via immigration or by war). The Turkish rulers had a large impact on the lives of Indians, but were always small in number. There were also no large scale conversions to Islam. There was however large scale temple destruction. The author shows clearly that Islamic iconoclasm was the main motivation. He gently chides modern day Marxist historians for trying to whitewash this issue.

Al-Hind: The Making of the Indo-Islamic World series gives the most comprehensive presentation of Islam's origins and long history in the sub-continent. Contrary to popular imagination the introduction of Islam first appeared in the south and south west of india (earliest reports suggest present day Kerala) and independently in the Island of Sri Lanka primarily by arab traders. This was a full century before skirmishes in the north west (present day pakistan and north india) between muslim troops sent to pacify pirate states to protect trade routes. Al three volumes provide the most comprehensive information about the history of half of the world muslims, one that is often ignored in todays sensationalist and monolithic view of Islam.

A Handbook for Dealing with Pushy, Domineering People

Les Parrott is a Christian psychology professor and author of several best sellers. He is well-known in the Christian community and is the founder and co-director of the Center for Relationship Development at Seattle Pacific University.

I have found Dr. Parrott's writings very useful in my ministry for adult children of abusive or controlling birth-families, Luke 17:3 Ministries. In this book, Dr. Parrott teaches us how to recognize a control freak and discusses their top ten characteristics- obnoxious, tenacious, invasive, obsessive, perfectionist, critical, irritable, demanding, rigid, and closeminded.

A Control Freak has little respect for privacy and snoops in areas that aren't her business. It doesn't matter how illogical his argument or how insignificant his point, he won't let go. He often zeroes in on some minor detail and doesn't care about the big picture. Compromise is unspeakable- she is right and everybody else is wrong. She sets standards you never agreed to live by. Anything and everything is cause for a tantrum. He will make ridiculous demands and insist or coerce you into doing things his way. He uses criticism as a terrific tool to get people to do what he wants them to.

There is a Control-Freak Self-Test which will tell you if you know a control-freak. Yes or No questions include: If something isn't exactly to this person's liking, he or she reflexively points it out- even at the risk of embarrassing others; It seems that winning an argument is more important to this person than finding the best solution; and If this person doesn't get what he or she wants, you can count on a good display of anger, pouting, or the silent treatment.

Very Helpful

As a person who deals with numerous control freaks, and who possesses the traits myself, I can appreciate Parrot's advice here for handling folks who refuse to do things any other way than their way. I can also appreciate his tips for tempering the control freak within me. His words are candid, thoughtful, and enlightening.

This book is a good read for anyone who interacts a great deal with people. Strained relationships can be mended and strengthened by taming the control freaks around us, and most importantly the control freak within us.

I picked up this book becuase I had problems with a few control freaks in my life. Reading it gave me a new perspective on why people control and how wide the scope can be. I'm also shocked to realise that a person like myself who's struggling with control freaks also has some control issues. Ironical as it sounds, Les is right to say that "it takes one to know one".

I'll recommend this book to anyone who's dealing with controlling people in their lives. It also provides suggestions on ways to improve those relationships.

Between a Rock and a Hard Place

Yeah, couldn't resist. But get your minds out of the gutter.

Alright, keep them there, because there are a lot of hot scenes in this book, in all sorts of combinations. Yes, it's true - there is human/fairy/elf STATUE sex in this book. But it's OK, because they get married in the end (yeah, as if a book like this would have any other kind of ending - this isn't Anna Karenina, ya know).

This is a quick, well written and fun read, filled with wanabee mean girls, scary teachers, evil fairy queens, dogs that make angry pit bulls look like Pok�mon, and lots of sex - oh wait, I already mentioned that. And one kick ass heroine - December (where do they come up with these names?) is worth her weight in gold.

Winter's Tale is a pretty naughty book that reads more like very well written high fantasy elf porn. Like something a young Legolas would have read with a flash light under the covers when his parents thought he was asleep. Winter's Tale is a naughty Narnia for grown-ups. A very rich & very precocious girl locked away in all girls boarding school gets super kinky in a graveyard with a statue of a 200 yo enchanted fairy. Caught between being a good girls gone wild story or riding on the crazy train delusional nympho story that would sound weird if you described it to a friend, Winter's Tale is just out there.

The story includes old rivalries, secret spells, danger, fae lore, and a daring escape. I can't go into specifics because they are super spoilery. So if you are in the mood for Mean Girls rock the Fae, check out this short sexy novella.
