A good book, if you are not going to build a database but hire someone to build it for you...
By VitoshAcademy

I am a blogger, writing reviews about IT books, IT articles and anything I find interesting. I have received the book "Databases for Small Business..." from the publisher Apress.Com for a review, upon a request form my site.

Well, after reading it, I may say one thing – it is an interesting book, covering many topics around a database, but it is not exactly a hands-on book about databases. E.g., if this is the first database book you are reading, you have to take a second one to be able to build some simple database to work with. At least my opinion.

The book uses MS Access and Libre Office 5 as an example databases, refers to MS Excel as well. The book is good for people, who do not have clue about databases, to act as an introduction to this world and probably to realize that their business needs a database instead of Excel spreadsheets. The case studies in the first few chapters are well described, and later some procedures for collecting, cleansing, maintaining, searching and analyzing data and database are explained without getting into details. In a really beginner’s way, which may be good for the understanding of a manager.

Let’s stop the hate (although I am not hating, but it just comes out this way) and point out some positive things –
– Some philosophy behind databases is explained in a really simple level with simple words – that would be good for anyone outside the IT business;
– Options for presenting the data as charts in Excel are given – at first I was thinking that this is a little aside from the book, but then I thought it is probably not so bad;
– Basic statistical terms as mode and median are explained – same as previous comment;

Actually I am really wondering how many stars to give – if you are expecting after reading this book to be able to make and maintain even a simple database alone, I have to probably disappoint you – you will not be. Really no. E.g. the querying in a db is explained in 2 pages, SQL is not mentioned, not all normalization rules are given.
However, if you are a manager of a company, and you have never heard about Databases nor you have some IT skills, this is probably the best book in the market to start with – the technical information will really not bother you, and the examples would be understandable. Thus, any grade is really possible for this book. I would not give 5, as far as the example databases are not shared in the net.

Thus, my grade is a 4, hoping that you only need the book to get some basic ideas for databases. And you would not try to create and maintain a database based only on this knowledge.

Highly recommended and worth the time!
By LisaFrag
Anyone with a small business knows how time consuming and multi-faceted such an endeavor can be. When I picked up this book, I was a bit worried it would be too technical or not add relevant value to my particular small business. I was pleasantly surprised to see it was written in a fashion easy for a layman to understand. The four different case studies give one a clear idea of how databases might be utilized in different business scenarios. The book then goes on to give a step by step process of selecting, designing and maintaing a database for one's organzation, with many examples and diagrams that help make the concepts clear. There is an entire chapter on reporting the data to those integral to the business and another on how to use the analysis for the benefit of the business.

If you are stuck on spreadsheets and unsure of whether a database will add value to your business, this book will definitely enlighten you! Highly recommended and worth the time!

Excellent Guide for Small Businesses and Non-profits alike
By Jon M.
In "Databases for Small Business", Anna Manning shows how small businesses and non-profits quickly outgrow the usefulness of using spreadsheet package to organize their data. She then makes the case that these organizations need a database instead, and argues that rather than paying for pre-packaged solutions, they can instead design and implement their own database, using software such as MS Access.

This book lays out a path for these organizations to follow, steering them through various aspects of database design and creation. The book also teaches users how to set up queries to retrieve data from the database, and then goes further to show how the data in the database can by analyzed in order to spot important patterns and trends that the data contains. The book also gives much practical advice on other aspects of database ownership, such as database maintenance, backup, security as well as touching on data protection and privacy issues - even training staff to use the database is covered.

The author keeps things grounded in reality throughout the book by using three ongoing cases studies in the examples in each chapter. I found these case studies to be really useful, as they allow Anna to cover the specifics of dealing with various data items, everything from customer and supplier information, sales, to lists of materials.

For something in this area, the book is unusually complete. Using this as a guide, small organizations should be able to safely and securely migrate their data into a database, and reap the rewards as they go forward. For those wishing to dig deeper in certain areas, the book points to other sources of information for further reading.

Highly recommended.

Who doesn't like an Assassin with a conscience?
By EDD
We liked Angel in Buffy, Belthazzar in Charmed and we now have Erevis Cale as our semi bad guy who trys to do good. This book is really gritty and down to earth. No airy fairy type crap in here. I liken it to David Gemmell's "Waylander". Dark but good.

Cale is an assasin/butler whose master is dead. He decides to leave his employment and is hunted down by a vicious band of terrorists( joking), shapechangers who are after an artifact which will gain their master power.

The race is on for Cale to find out what the Hell is going on and why they are after him. His only companions are a halfling theif/cleric and a ex Zentil Keep assasin who really doesn't like either of them. Trust is pretty low.

When i say Cale tries to do good, i mean that his basic intentions are good but he has no problem getting down and dirty solving a problem, or torturing someone to get what he wants.

This book far exceeds the majority of Forgotten realms books i have read or sold ( I work in Dymocks Garden City Perth) and i should know having read my share of FR books. Now we all like our Salvatore books with Drizzt but i have to say that i like Cale better, not only can he fight, but the story is darker and you get that feel that the lights are down low and monsters around the corner. Also Mask the god isn't so much of a pansy as i have read in other books. With Salvatore you get that knight in shining armour feel which can get predictable after a while.

Dark But Far From Empty!
By Joe Rixman
Rarely do I come across a book that so quickly and completely captivates my imagination. Twilight Falling, the first novel of "The Erevis Cale Trilogy," is one such book.

Paul Kemp has crafted a novel of dark fantasy, rife with meaning, tone and richly detailed characterization, all the things you would wish from an outstanding work of literature. Along with an interesting plot and a writing style that practically forces the next page to be turned, This is among the finest fantasy novels I have read in some time.

Erevis Cale is an assassin, who, at the beginning of the story, also works as a butler for a powerful merchant family in an part of the Forgotten Realms known as Sembia. This book starts off where a previous novel of Mr. Kemp's, "Shadow's Witness," ends. The death of the family patriarch has provided the impetus for Erevis Cale to move on, to leave behind the life of family butler and to embrace his new role, that of a Priest to the God Mask, Lord of Shadows.

As Cale puts it, several times, Mask is a bastard, and rarely do things go well for Cale as he, and a former rival Drasek Riven, another assassin, are drawn into the schemes of a mage the god Cyric the Mad and his attempts to transform himself into a Shade, a being of shadow that is practically immortal. Along with Cale and Riven is Cale's friend Jak Fleet, a Halfling cleric and a former member of a group of do-gooders called the Harpers. These three heroes must discover who is trying to kill them and why before the Shadow Mage accomplishes his task.

Throughout the novel, Mr. Kemp creates characters that, for want of a better phrase, are as real as possible in a fantasy setting. Erevis Cale is constantly at war with himself. Is he a cold-blooded murderer, like Riven, or does he have a good soul, as Jak believes. The answer is a resounding yes...to both questions. Even Riven, who soul is perhaps the darkest of them all, finds levels of goodness that he isn't even aware he has, caring for two stray mutts and ensuring their health long after he is forced to leave them behind. Jak, the conscience, is willing to take the steps toward darkness after a violent and disturbing experience leaves his near death.

The tone of this book is dark, brooding and crammed with action and violence that, while not overwhelming, is not what one would expect in a Forgotten Realms novel. This, however, is one of the book's strengths, as it lends an almost realistic feel to the swords and sorcery otherwise being employed by the characters.

Finally, what makes this novel stand above most other fantasy, specifically shared-world, work, it the depth of exploration Mr. Kemp gives to the themes of this story. Redemption, friendship and loyalty are all given their just due by each of the characters, all of whom arc beautifully from beginning to end. As in life, our experiences change us, sometimes for the better, other times not to much. From the first page to the last, each of the three major characters experiences this arc...and leaves you gasping for breathe as the last scene unfolds...and sets you up for Page One of Book Two, "Dawn of Night," which you absolutely MUST begin reading immediately upon finishing Twilight Falling!

By Kris Miranda
The Forgotten Realms, and most shared fiction universes, tend to be disdained as less-than-substantive, and the writers as second-rate folks who don't have what it takes to get a "real" book published. Once in awhile, sure, a tie-in book is mediocre, but don't you get that everywhere? A lot of authors have proven time and again that tie-ins can be pretty damn great, and Paul Kemp is one of them.

The only complication about entering the Erevis Cale Trilogy is that it really helps to have read the entire preceding Sembia series, starting with Halls of Stormweather. Only Shadow's Witness stars Cale and is by Kemp, but the story of the Uskevren clan is made up of many threads, and a few of those are tied up in Twilight Falling. One can go on and enjoy the book, of course, but a more complete attachment to Cale - and yes, the other stars of the Sembia series - is necessary to fully appreciate certain moments. It also helps to have read a post-Shadow's Witness Cale short story whose name escapes me at the moment, but which is now available for free on Mr. Kemp's website.

Whew. Enough intro. One of the first things one might want to say about a Kemp novel (or a Salvatore novel or a Gemmell novel) is that the action, the fighting, the choreography, is great. And it's true. But don't make the mistake of thinking that action-heavy equals plot/character-lite. I believe a mantra Kemp goes by is "don't write action sequences; write suspense sequences that require action to resolve." It's an approach that's worked very well, and the reason is that suspense, I think, requires a level of affection for the characters in the predicament. A mindless fight with characters you don't care about is unfulfilling. A fight with characters you do care about, but with a conclusion that you can see coming, is also unfulfilling. But when the outcome's up in the air... Yes, there's plenty of great action in Twilight, but none of it is unnecessary, and little of it is predictable.

Kemp's created a terrific ensemble cast, giving his antagonists as much care and attention as his heroes. Of course, in Selgaunt, one is advised to use the word "hero" loosely. Cale is a decent man at heart, with iron discipline. What makes him interesting is why he needs that discipline, why it's so admirable. Like many of my favorite fantasy heroes, he's got a potentially dangerous temper and a talent for violence, and though he does his best not to let these consume him, when it's necessary to cause some pain, he doesn't hold back. Some might agree with his style, others might not -- because Twilight is written in a fairly tight POV, there is no omniscient authorial apology or justification for Cale's actions, only what he thinks of them and what his companions have to say. You make your own judgment, and that's a good thing. You're not being preached to in Twilight, even if it sometimes seems like some characters are preaching to each other. There's enough internal conflict and uncertainty that the answers aren't easy.

Difficult answers in a fantasy novel? And a shared-universe work at that? Surprised? Well, don't be. Kemp doesn't so much give us good and evil as virtue and malevolence, and assorted motivations and worldviews that keep things interesting. There's no take-over-the world scheme here, or destroy-all-that-is-good-and-beautiful. No, the motives make more sense, because they're more personal, and personal, I feel, is at least a little more plausible than sweeping and world-encompassing. These characters are people, not plot devices, and that, ultimately, is the reason these books are so good.

Fifty Shades Trilogy (Fifty Shades of Grey / Fifty Shades Darker / Fifty Shades Freed), by E L James

FIFTY SHADES OF GREYIS NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE
Now available as a three-volume paperback boxed set, E L James’s New York Times #1 bestselling trilogy has been hailed by Entertainment Weekly as being “in a class by itself.” Beginning with the GoodReads Choice Award Romance Finalist Fifty Shades of Grey, the Fifty Shades Trilogy will obsess you, possess you, and stay with you forever.

This boxed set includes the following novels:

FIFTY SHADES OF GREY: When college student Anastasia Steele goes to interview young entrepreneur Christian Grey, she encounters a man who is beautiful, brilliant, and intimidating. The unworldly Ana realizes she wants this man, and Grey admits he wants her, too—but on his own terms. When the couple embarks on a daring, passionately physical affair, Ana discovers Christian’s secrets and explores her own desires.

FIFTY SHADES DARKER: Daunted by Christian’s dark secrets and singular tastes, Ana has broken off their relationship to start a new career. But desire for Christian still dominates her every waking thought. They rekindle their searing sensual affair, and while Christian wrestles with his inner demons, Ana is forced to make the most important decision of her life.

FIFTY SHADES FREED: Now, Ana and Christian have it all—love, passion, intimacy, wealth, and a world of possibilities for their future. But Ana knows that loving her Fifty Shades will not be easy, and that being together will pose challenges that neither of them would anticipate. Just when it seems that their strength together will eclipse any obstacle, misfortune, malice, and fate conspire to turn Ana’s deepest fears into reality.

This book is intended for mature audiences.

Bestseller? Really???
By DS from LA
I enjoy erotica and heard so much about this book that I had to give it a shot, but I'm five chapters in and just can't take it anymore. This has to be the most appallingly atrocious writing I've ever seen in a major release. The pseudonymous British author sets the action (such as it is) in Washington State... for no reason than that her knowledge of America apparently consists of what she read in "Twilight"... but the entire first-person narrative is filled with Britishisms. How many American college students do you know who talk about "prams," "ringing" someone on the phone, or choosing a "smart rucksack" to take "on holiday"? And the author's geography sounds like she put together a jigsaw puzzle of the Pacific Northwest while drunk and ended up with several pieces in the wrong place.

And oh, the repetition...and the repetition...and the repetition. I'm convinced the author has a computer macro that she hits to insert one of her limited repertoire of facial expressions whenever she needs one. According to my Kindle search function, characters roll their eyes 41 times, Ana bites her lip 35 times, Christian's lips "quirk up" 16 times, Christian "cocks his head to one side" 17 times, characters "purse" their lips 15 times, and characters raise their eyebrows a whopping 50 times. Add to that 80 references to Ana's anthropomorphic "subconscious" (which also rolls its eyes and purses its lips, by the way), 58 references to Ana's "inner goddess," and 92 repetitions of Ana saying some form of "oh crap" (which, depending on the severity of the circumstances, can be intensified to "holy crap," "double crap," or the ultimate "triple crap"). And this is only part one of a trilogy...

If I wrote like that, I'd use a pseudonym too.

Like some other reviewers, what I find terribly depressing is that this is a runaway bestseller and the movie rights are expected to sell for up to $5 million. There are so many highly talented writers in the genre... and erotica is so much more erotic when the author has a command of the language and can make you care about the characters. For examples, check out the "Beauty" trilogy written by Anne Rice under the pen name A.N. Roquelaure, or any stories by Donna George Storey or Rachel Kramer Bussel. Just stay away from this triple crap.

*UPDATE*: Thanks to the many other perturbed readers who have shared their own choices of the most annoyingly overused phrases in this masterpiece. Following up on their suggestions with my ever-useful Kindle search function, I have discovered that Ana says "Jeez" 81 times and "oh my" 72 times. She "blushes" or "flushes" 125 times, including 13 that are "scarlet," 6 that are "crimson," and one that is "stars and stripes red." (I can't even imagine.) Ana "peeks up" at Christian 13 times, and there are 9 references to Christian's "hooded eyes," 7 to his "long index finger," and 25 to how "hot" he is (including four recurrences of the epic declarative sentence "He's so freaking hot."). Christian's "mouth presses into a hard line" 10 times. Characters "murmur" 199 times, "mutter" 49 times, and "whisper" 195 times (doesn't anyone just talk?), "clamber" on/in/out of things 21 times, and "smirk" 34 times. Christian and Ana also "gasp" 46 times and experience 18 "breath hitches," suggesting a need for prompt intervention by paramedics. Finally, in a remarkable bit of symmetry, our hero and heroine exchange 124 "grins" and 124 "frowns"... which, by the way, seems an awful lot of frowning for a woman who experiences "intense," "body-shattering," "delicious," "violent," "all-consuming," "turbulent," "agonizing" and "exhausting" orgasms on just about every page.

Not the worst I've ever read... No, wait. It IS.
By Ebeth822
I downloaded the book to my Kindle because it was on the best seller list and had 4 stars overall rating on Amazon. I wish I'd taken the time to read some of the reviews. As it turns out I agree with the negative.
I found myself thinking "Twilight, plus some spanking, minus the sparkly vampires." Here, I'll save you all some time (SPOILER ALERT):

Once upon a time...
I'm Ana. I'm clumsy and naive. I like books. I dig this guy. He couldn't possibly like me. He's rich. I wonder if he's gay? His eyes are gray. Super gray. Intensely gray. Intense AND gray. Serious and gray. Super gray. Dark and gray. [insert 100+ other ways to say "gray eyes" here]
I blush. I gasp. He touches me "down there." I gasp again. He gasps. We both gasp. I blush some more. I gasp some more. I refer to my genitals as "down there" a few more times. I blush some more. Sorry, I mean I "flush" some more. I bite my lip. He gasps a lot more. More gasping. More blushing/flushing. More lip biting. Still more gasping.
The end.

The bad:
It was an interesting concept - for a romance novel. However the story is weak, the pace is slow and awkward, the characters come through as more schizophrenic than complicated, the "romance" is a juvenile and dysfunctional crush, and the "erotic" scenes alternate between Penthouse Forum and something that sounds like it was written by a painfully shy and sheltered 13 year old. I have now read through some of the rave reviews and I have to assume that these were posted by people easily shocked and/or titillated. I can't imagine what fans are comparing this to when they describe this as "good."

The good:
Nice cover art.
