TEXAS PROUD IS WONDERFUL!!!
By A Customer
This is Noble Vincente's story and the prequel to his sister, Sabor Vincente's story in RIDE THE WIND. Rachel belives that Noble killed her father, and when he returns to town, she is laying in wait for him. She loves him desperately, but she believes she has to avenge her father's death. What a wonderful story--it opens with Rachel's gun trained on the unsuspecting Noble. I read it twice and will probably read it again. After you read this you will want to go on and read RIDE THE WIND which is equally wonderful!!!

By stacey renee
Ms O'Banyon is a wonderful author. Texas Proud is well written with a unique plot and surprising twists. The characters are so defined that u can feel their angst and their passion. The dialogue is witty and real. Best of all Rachel is as strong a female lead as her counterpart Nobel Vincente. It also gives a post traumatic stress perspective of that post civil war era. How incredibly simply she defines that war: a civil war that was anything but civil. I love that era because emotions were intense, actions theoretically noble and history so defining.

A good all round book........

The Clinton's Anti-Working-Class Record, by Jack Barnes

Never before have presidential candidates of both major capitalist parties evoked such distrust, disgust, and aversion among working people as in the 2016 elections. Hillary Clinton contemptuously calls millions of workers who refuse to vote for her deplorable, even irredeemable. Donald Trump demagogically tries to turn us against each other, targeting Mexicans, Muslims, women, and whomever. Both seek to divert us from seeing that it s working people the world over who ve been made to carry the burdens of capitalism s global economic and social calamity and spreading wars. The Clintons Anti-Working-Class Record documents the profit-driven course of the US rulers since the Clintons first took up residence in the White House in 1993. It points to the anger and wide-ranging discussion among working people looking to understand and effectively resist the employers assault. For the first time in decades, as Clinton s words reveal, the US rulers and their government have begun to fear the working class. Jack Barnes is National Secretary of the Socialist Workers Party.

WHY HILLARY CLINTON LOST--CAPITALISM IN CRISIS
By Marc Lichtman
“’Deplorables.’ ’irredeemable.’ Those are Hillary Clinton’s contemptuous labels for millions of working people in the United States living and trying to work amid capitalism’s grinding decline.

“This book is about those millions and others like us the world over. It is about why we are at the center of politics today, and will become more so in the months and years after the new US administration is sworn in on January 20, 2017.

“Clinton’s deeply held attitudes, blurted out in a rare unscripted moment to wealthy supporters during a Manhattan fund-raising event, revealed what millions of working people already know all too well. Workers and our families have lived for more than two decades with the consequences of the Clintons’ first occupancy of the White House, from 1993 to 2001, when they made the brutal drive to end “welfare as we know it” their hallmark. And when they pushed through legislation such as the grotesquely named “Anti-Terrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act,” which has had a devastating impact on working-class families, especially those who are African American.”--From the introduction by Steve Clark.

This book (and an article in the Militant which I'm appending here) explains why Trump won the election. Hillary Clinton represented to most working people "the establishment," and extreme elitism. If the Democrats had picked "socialist" Bernie Sanders, he would have won against Trump. He also has no answers to the capitalist crisis, but he doesn't ignore it. And neither did Trump. He ran a Bonapartist-type election campaign ("only I can fix it"), but he can't rule as a Bonapartist. In fact, he's already had to back down from most of his wild promises, and incorporate a large variety of conservative opinion into his administration.

This book also explains why the capitalist system is in decline, the understanding of which is a starting point for building a party that can bring the working class into power.

Trump victory registers crisis of bosses’ parties
2016: Most important US election in 100 years

BY Naomi Craine

The November 2016 U.S. presidential election was the most significant in more than a century. It registered the blows that have been dealt since the 2008-09 world capitalist financial crisis to the stability of the two-party system through which the U.S. capitalist class has long governed. Both the Republican and Democratic parties are being deeply shaken.

Underlying the crisis of banking and money capital are decades of downward-trending profit rates and contracting production, trade and hiring. The competition-driven operations of the capitalist system, and the resulting policies of the employing class and their government, are imposing ever greater burdens on the backs of working people — unemployment, declining real wages, speedup and unsafe conditions on the job, sharply rising medical costs, vanishing pensions and more.

These social and political consequences are explained in a new book by Jack Barnes, national secretary of the Socialist Workers Party, that came off the presses just days before the election: The Clintons’ Anti-Working-Class Record: Why Washington Fears Working People. “Barnes describes the human toll on working people in the United States,” says SWP leader Steve Clark in the introduction, “including the gutting of the meager ‘social safety net’ won in hard-fought battles by the US working class over decades. He explains what growing numbers of workers already sense is happening to us, no matter how vehemently the wealthy and powerful deny it. We are living through … a global capitalist crisis like none of us have ever seen before.”

More and more workers and farmers today “are already engaged in a wide-ranging and angry discussion of this capitalist reality,” Clark says. “Although no one can foresee the timing, the financial capitalists and well-paid professionals who serve them sense that mounting struggle — class struggle — lies ahead.”

That’s why “for the first time in decades, the US rulers and their government have begun to fear the working class.”

Hillary Clinton acted as if she could win the election while turning her back on working people and the increasingly desperate conditions confronting tens of millions across the U.S. She made little effort to campaign in working-class areas of the Midwest, such as Michigan and Wisconsin. In the name of cleaner energy, she said, “We’re going to put a lot of coal miners and coal companies out of business.” And Clinton contemptuously called workers considering a vote for Trump “deplorable” and “irredeemable.”

Many of the key places that tipped the scales for Trump to win the electoral vote were working-class areas where a majority, including workers who are Caucasian, had voted for Barack Obama in 2012. In Ohio’s coal-mining Monroe County, Obama beat Republican Mitt Romney by 8 points four years ago; this time Trump won by 47 points. In Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, home of the industrial city of Wilkes-Barre, Trump won by 19 points, where Obama had won by 5 percent.

Many fewer workers who are Black turned out to vote for Clinton, too. In Detroit, her winning margin was 90,000 votes less than Obama’s in 2012. In Flint, Michigan, her edge was less than half of Obama’s four years earlier. In Milwaukee’s District 15 — an area that is 84 percent African-American — turnout fell by 19.5 percent from 2012.

The election results shattered the illusion among Clinton and her machine that they could count on a sweep of African-Americans anywhere comparable to that for the first Democratic Party presidential candidate who was Black. Nor was there any “surge” in voting for Clinton by Latinos and women.

The story was repeated in working-class and rural areas across the country. As conditions got worse for millions of workers under Obama, many looked for something new, for a “change.” And millions more couldn’t stand either candidate and just stayed home — the turnout was the lowest in 20 years.

Many bourgeois liberals, middle-class radicals and much of the big-business media claim Trump won as the result of a racist backlash by what they call “the white working class.” Somehow millions of workers who had voted for an African-American for president in 2008 and again in 2012 had amazingly been transformed into reactionary bigots a few years later!

A growing number of liberals go even further, saying the outcome of the election shows that workers are a mass of stupid, uneducated people, whose right to vote poses mounting dangers.

The president-elect received “massive support from uneducated, low-information white people,” wrote Jason Brennan in Foreign Policy magazine. It was a “dance of the dunces.” Brennan, a professor at Georgetown University, argues that the right to vote should be limited to those who pass a “political knowledge” test. Or, “high-information” people (like himself) should be given extra votes.

Such contempt for — and above all fear of — the working class is typical of what SWP leader Jack Barnes calls the “meritocracy” in his recent book, Are They Rich Because They’re Smart? Class, Privilege, and Learning Under Capitalism. Many among this expanding middle-class layer, heavily based in universities, foundations, the media and the “tech” industry, Barnes says, “truly believe that their ‘brightness,’ their ‘quickness,’ their ‘contributions to public life,’ … give them the right to make decisions, to administer and ‘regulate’ society for the bourgeoisie — on behalf of what they claim to be the interests of ‘the people.’”

The petty-bourgeois left reacted to Trump’s election with similar anti-working-class hysteria. “For the most part, those who attend and cheer at Trump rallies are deplorable,” wrote Workers World Party leader Teresa Gutierrez, embracing the smear coined by Clinton. “Most have crossed a line” and “reflect a danger.”

Leading up to the elections, Trump faced widespread opposition within the top rungs of the Republican Party. Far from being housebroken by such figures, however, Trump is setting out to remake the Republican Party in his own image.

The Democratic Party is in shambles. The wing around Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, whose primary campaign was blocked by the blatant rigging of Clinton and the national Democratic machine, is seeking to take over the party.

“I’m not here to blame anybody,” Sanders said disingenuously at a Washington, D.C., rally Nov. 17. “But facts are facts,” he said. “When you lose the White House to the least popular candidate in the history of America, when you lose the Senate, when you lose the House and when two-thirds of governors in this country are Republican, it is time for a new direction for the Democratic party!”

’The 2016 election was a further registration of the coming apart of “globalization.” That’s the classless term pro-capitalist commentators use to describe the international expansion over the last several decades of world trade, capital flows and labor migration, as well as the accelerated (and risky) interconnection of capitalist banking and bond trading.

Some among the world’s ruling classes and professionals who do their bidding dreamed this could lead to supernational economic and political bodies, like the European Union, transcending nation states (and thus both trade wars and shooting wars) as the wave of the future.

But the European Union ran aground on the reality that dog-eat-dog capitalist relations, especially under the pressure of economic and social breakdowns, depend on nation states, national currencies, national armies — and the handful of propertied ruling families of each country whose class interests these national institutions serve and protect.

The richer, stronger European imperialist powers in the north, led by Berlin, grew fat at the expense of the weaker south (and, since 1989, east). The fantasy of an “ever-greater union” shattered when the Greek government was forced into bankruptcy, leading to deep assaults on working people there. Italy could well be next.

Likewise Obama’s plans for massive “trade” agreements (with their maze of bureaucracies and regulations) like the Trans-Pacific Partnership — which he touted as a signal achievement of his presidency — are now dead in the water.

These developments, too, help explain the outcome of the 2016 U.S. election, as well as Brexit — the referendum passed in Britain earlier this year to leave the European Union.

What’s more, the U.S. rulers are carrying out seemingly endless wars and bringing catastrophe to working people — from Afghanistan to Iraq and Syria, as well as to working-class and farm families offered up as cannon fodder in the United States and elsewhere.

The policies the U.S. rulers, in both major capitalist parties, have pursued since the 2008 financial crash, such as holding interest rates near zero and “regulatory” legislation, have failed to generate growth and employment or decrease the concentration and risk of banking capital. The same is true for Washington’s imperialist rivals in Tokyo and more recently Europe.

Even before the 2016 election, a growing number of voices across the spectrum of bourgeois politics began acknowledging this failure and urging greater emphasis on “fiscal policy” — that is, government spending and tax measures — instead of “monetary” remedies.

Trump was among them, pledging to kick start “growth” and “jobs” with $1 trillion in infrastructure construction and repairs — roads, bridges, airports, water and sewage systems and so on. Some Democratic Party officials, like Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer, have jumped to offer to work with Trump to get such measures through Congress. Long-term interest rates have begun creeping up, and the prospect of rising inflation in the months and years to come is real.

But whatever temporary jobs such government-funded projects might produce, they will not generate the long-term capital investment in expanded industrial plant, equipment, production and hiring that could reverse the worldwide contraction of capitalist production and trade today.

In fact, there’s no policy the rulers can implement that can resolve the underlying crisis of production and trade, nor the unraveling of their imperialist order, that the capitalists don’t take out of the living standards, job conditions, and life and limb of hundreds of millions of working people in the U.S. and the world over. These are all the result of the workings of capitalism itself.

The big majority of the U.S. ruling class mobilized enormous funding and used the newspapers, TV and other institutions in unparalleled ways to elect Hillary Clinton. All pretense of journalistic “objectivity” went by the wayside. CNN became widely know as the “Clinton News Network.”

But the capitalist rulers have quickly put that behind them.

In interviews and statements since the election, Trump backed away from some of his reactionary demagogy, such as building a wall along the Mexican border (he now says it will feature fencing). On the CBS show “60 Minutes” he said he will prioritize deporting immigrants with “criminal records, gang members, drug dealers” — what the Obama administration is doing.

Gay marriage, Trump said, is a settled question by the Supreme Court. He said he’d keep a couple of the provisions of Obamacare, including barring denial of coverage to those with pre-existing conditions, and only repeal it when Congress adopts something to replace it. The one thing he pointedly wouldn’t back off on was opposition to women’s right to choose abortion.

All these social and political questions and more, the product of bipartisan attacks over years, remain important fights for the working class. That includes defending Muslims and mosques whenever and wherever they come under attack.

Trump’s demagogy about the problems facing working people did absolutely nothing to advance class consciousness. To the contrary, everything he stands for aims to keep workers divided and weak — a danger to the working-class and labor movement. Like Obama, Clinton and the Democratic Party, he talks about the classless “we” in order to paper over the irreconcilable conflict between the interests of working people and those of the capitalist rulers.

Not just during the election campaign, but day in and day out, year round, the Socialist Workers Party explains that there are “three parties and two classes” in U.S. politics. Two are the parties of the bosses and war makers, the Democrats and Republicans.

And there is the SWP, whose support for struggles and demands of workers and the oppressed and working class program and activity point a way toward the fight for workers power.

As the president-elect puts together his cabinet and the rulers try to find a new road to stabilize capitalism in crisis — including their two-party system — the SWP is deepening its political activity in the working class. Party members knock on workers’ doors and join the discussion and debate, which remains as open and broad-ranging after the election as before, explaining why workers need to unite in solidarity against the attacks of the bosses and their government and build our own political party.

Sleeping with Dogs: A Peripheral Autobiography, by Brian Sewell

Sleeping with Dogs is the record of one man's passionate affection for the dog, rooted in his early childhood and lasting undiminished into his dotage. These were for the most part dogs discarded and left to fate - tied to the railings of Kensington Gardens, found with a broken leg in the wilds of Turkey, adopted from an animal rescue home, passed on by the vet - but there was also a whippet of noble pedigree and three generations of a family of crossbreeds in which the whippet strain was strong. They were not pets, but indulged friends and companions, with all of whom he shared his bed, and who richly rewarded him with loyalty and affection. This is not a sentimental or determinedly anthropomorphic book - the dogs remain steadfastly dogs. It is observant and records the canine society of dog and dog as much as the relationship of man and dog. It is, at the same time, a deeply touching account of the lives and very different characters of seventeen dogs over eighty years or so, ranging from Jack Russell to Alsatian through half-boxer, half-pointer and half-Karabas, to purest indecipherable mongrel.

How many of us would lie with a dying dog for days?
By Konrad
Deeply touching to me at times, the depth and sincerity of Brian Sewell's relationships with his dogs over his lifetime is a read not quite like any other I've experienced. I've owned dogs and had to make those decisions for them on ending their lives, but never with the feeling I got reading Sewell writing how he laid on the floor with one of his dying dogs. I've read more about Sewell's life [he died on September 19th 2015] and he was quite a controversial character in his personal and professional life, not one to shy from an intellectual fight or deny a disgraced mentor, he was also a real dog person and his book reflects his lifetime commitment to his animal companions.

Konrad.

Review

“The text provides invaluable information onhow to assess as well as offerinstruction to struggling readers ranging from emergent and beginning to older readers.”Ioney James, North Carolina A & T State University

From the Inside Flap
Preface

Helping all students to become effective, strategic readers who read and write enthusiastically and purposefully is one of the greatest challenges facing teachers today. Teachers need to know how to

use a wide variety of teaching methods, materials, and strategies to help children learn to read,

monitor and document students' progress, strengths, and needs,

diagnose difficulties in reading and related areas,

apply corrective instruction when appropriate, and

prevent literacy problems from arising in the future.

To do so, teachers need well-informed diagnostic judgment and the tools and strategies to monitor students' development effectively. Such strategies and tools must be flexible and practical, tapping the kinds of everyday reading and writing that students use in and out of the classroom.

Teachers must also undertake corrective instruction within the context of regular ongoing instruction, without setting problem readers apart from others. Such diagnostic and instructional strategies are the heart of this book.

When the first edition of this book appeared in 1982, we wrote in that preface that the field of reading education was undergoing exciting changes. In each successive edition, we have reiterated this thought, because it remained true. The first few editions saw the growing use of informal diagnostic techniques gradually supplant the use of formal, standardized diagnostic tests, as well as a growing responsibility for classroom teachers to undertake their own diagnostic assessment. Basal reading systems and skills management systems, once the linchpin of reading instruction, were challenged by literature-based approaches and collaborative learning.

Today, new emphases on authentic assessment that accurately represents what students can do challenge our thinking about measurement and evaluation. Simultaneously, many states are struggling to define ways to increase student achievement and ensure accountability to the public. Today's teachers are expected to use continuous developmental assessment devices; to use portfolios of student work to demonstrate and evaluate student achievement; to teach reading using authentic literature and a wide variety of teaching methods; to integrate reading and writing across all curricular areas; and to help all students, regardless of their level of literacy, to become effective, strategic readers.

This book provides the kind of clear, detailed, realistic help teachers need to fulfill these expectations.

The concepts and principles that guided the development of the first four editions, and which made this book a leader in its field, have been strengthened and expanded in the fifth edition. We have

updated and expanded our treatment of important trends in research and practice, including emergent literacy, portfolio assessment, strategic reading, literature-based instruction, learning English as a second language, and developmentally appropriate assessment and instruction;

described the primary purposes for assessment and the important differences between assessments for internal and external audiences;

expanded and elaborated upon our extensive coverage of instructional approaches and methods, including new material on emergent literacy, beginning and developmental literacy, the development of reading strategies, word recognition, developing predictive thinking, teaching adolescent poor readers, increasing students' time spent reading, and content-area reading strategies; and

added all-new material on teaching students whose first language is other than English and on authentic assessment, with an emphasis on lifelong literacy.

Convincing case studies of real readers and examples of real students, work are used throughout the book to illustrate points and help users develop diagnosticcorrective judgment.

The fifth edition examines both traditional and contemporary means of assessing reading strengths and needs, as well as developmental and corrective instruction; our goal has been to combine the best tried-and-true methods with the best new strategies for diagnosing and teaching. Emphasis is placed on preventing reading problems by providing necessary experiences for children to develop and progress as readers, as well as on correction and remediation.

The first five chapters comprise Part One, dealing with assessment topics and issues. Chapter 1 describes what teachers need to know about the reading process and its assessment, including the internal and external audiences for assessment data, an overview of reading developmental stages, and an introduction to principles that underlie authentic assessment.

Chapter 2 describes various types of ongoing assessments teachers often use, including running records, systematic observation of students, reading strategies, the use of cloze procedures, and monitoring growth in spelling and composition.

Chapter 3 details widely used methods for the periodic, in-depth assessment of reading progress, including how to select, administer, score and interpret informal reading inventories and related devices.

Chapter 4 describes in detail the purposes of classroom portfolios and how to begin and manage a portfolio assessment program. Included are strategies for enlisting the support of administrators and parents, conferring with parents and fostering students' self-evaluation.

Chapter 5 deals with formal assessments, including fundamental measurement concepts, characteristics of tests, norm-referenced and criterion-referenced tests, and minimum competency tests.

The remaining six chapters deal primarily with instructional topics and issues.

Chapter 6 details the stages of emergent and beginning reading, including assessing and teaching print concepts and phonemic awareness, fostering reading comprehension, and early intervention programs.

Chapter 7 deals with teaching developing readers who are beyond the beginning reading stage. Developing word recognition strategies, including sight recognition and word analysis strategies, reading fluency, and reading and listening comprehension are major themes. The critical issue of how much time students spend actually reading is discussed, with implications for teachers and parents.

Chapter 8 deals with teaching older students and adolescents who are reluctant or disabled readers. The special challenges of dealing with older beginning readers are detailed, with authentic case studies and a wealth of instructional recommendations.

Chapter 9 details how students progress to mature reading and writing, in which students are no longer learning to read but are now using reading to learn. The reading-to-learn operations of anticipation, investigation, and reflection are described with numerous teaching strategies. Predictable patterns of nonfiction text organization and effective vocabulary teaching are presented.

Chapter 10 an entirely new chapter in the fifth edition, describes strategies for teaching reading and writing to students whose first language is not English. Principles and processes of second language learning and bilingualism are detailed, along with ways to adapt phonics, decoding and spelling instruction for students who may struggle with some English phonemes, and scaffolding to improve comprehension of written English.

Chapter 11 deals with philosophical, legal, and instructional issues related to the teaching of students with special learning needs. Relevant legislation, issues of inclusion, and ways of identifying and assessing special-needs students are outlined. Intellectual factors and tests of intelligence and learning aptitude, physical factors related to vision and hearing, language development and disorders, and the special challenges of learning disabilities and dyslexia are discussed.

As in the previous four editions, we are indebted to a growing list of friends, colleagues, and strangers for their influence advice and encouragement. Our friend and colleague Alan Crawford wrote Chapter 10 and gave us invaluable insight and support. Samuel R. Mathews II and Josephine Peyton Young provided generous contributions to the fourth edition which are still felt in this edition. Jackson-Via Elementary School's Karyl Reynolds, media specialist, and Tracy Snead, first-grade teacher, contributed their special expertise in the development of bibliographies and literature searches, as well as their friendship and support. Our colleagues in the Reading and Writing for Critical Thinking Project—Jeannie Steele, Kurt Meredith, Scott Walter, Donna Ogle, and Alan Crawford-along with 70 volunteer teacher educators and hundreds of international colleagueshave deeply affected our thinking on reading-to-learn issues.

We are grateful for the careful reading and insightful criticism of our fifth edition manuscript reviewers: Mariam Jean Dreher, University of Maryland; Lee A. Dubert, Boise State University; Ann Harris, Austin Peay State University; Ellen Jampole, SUNY Cordand; Barbara Laster, Towson University; David C. Little, Samford University; Patrick McCabe, Nova Southeastern University; Richard Osterberg, California State University, Fresno; Barbara Pugh, California State University, Bakersfield; Mark Sadoski, Texas A&M University; and Rebecca Swearingen, Southwest Missouri State University. We also gratefully acknowledge the many helpful suggestions we have received since the first edition appeared from the reviewers and users of previous editions.

We also extend our heartfelt thanks to our editor, Virginia Blanford, and her staff at Addison Wesley Longman; our editor on previous editions, Christopher Dennison; and to Susan Free and the production staff at York Production Services.

Finally, we are grateful to our students and colleagues at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Mary Baldwin College, and the Charlottesville, Virginia, Public Schools. Many, many people helped make this book what it is; we acknowledge their many influences with gratitude and offer our work to you with pride.

Understanding Reading Problems: Assessment and Instructions
By Tabitha
I ordered this book for my graduate course in reading. This is an excellent resource for reading teachers and specialist. It contains all the elements that teachers will need to become effective reading teachers. This is a textbook that I will certainly hang on to for future reference. This is an excellent textbook. I do have one complaint. The typeface is smaller and very faint as compared to other textbooks of this size. The typeface is difficult to read and there is too much information squeezed onto a single page. The authors could enhance the book by adding more charts, graphs, captions, photos, and pictorial examples, etc. However, it is a work of great scholarship.

An Excellent Resource For Study in Context
By Elizabeth
I am using this book as part of a "how to teach reading" course. I doubt I could digest it on my own, but having to read it in the context of guided study I am coming to appreciate it as an in-depth resource. Although I am a novice in this skill of how to teach reading, I appreciate the many citations to research-backed instructional techniques, particularly for ELL students. This book has extensive focus on assessment as well. I would be very interested to see the scholarly reviews of this book and I wish that the scholars would post their reviews here.

Dance to the Fiddle--March to the Fife: Instrumental Folk Tunes in Pennsylvania, by Samuel P. Bayard

The 651 tunes presented in this book represent an important segment of the musical heritage of North America and comprise what may well be the largest collection of Anglo-Celtic -American instrumental folk music. Tunes brought over by the first settlers from England, Germany, Scotland, and Ireland remained essentially unchanged -despite many variations- in the less accessible parts of Pennsylvania, thus preserving a musical tradition that stretches from colonial times to the recent past. The advent of electronic media and automotive transport brought an end to the isolation that sustained that tradition, and today its music is being diluted and homogenized through outside influences.Professor Bayard began collecting tunes in southwestern Pennsylvania in 1928 by listening to local fiddlers and fifers and transcribing what they played into standard musical notation by ear. His later collecting was aided by the addition of a tape recorder in 1948. The tunes he collected , along with those furnished by his associates in this project, were then sorted and organized into the present collection of 651 (some with as many as 25 versions) and annotated with the aid of leading authorities and published sources. The book starts with an introduction describing the general character of the tunes, the playing techniques of the fiddlers and fifers, and the circumstances in which the tunes were played. A note on the treatment of the music explains how tunes were used for different purposes (various dance and march steps, for example) through rhythmic modifications, and also details how fingering in traditional fiddling is related to key and pitch. The 651 tunes, arranged roughly by function (i.e., by the most type of dance with which they are most often associated) are each labeled to show whether they were played on the fiddle, the fife, or both, and each tune version is identified by when, from whom, and by whom it was collected. An appendix connects the Pennsylvania tunes to other ones by giving transcriptions of 44 related tunes from Missouri, Indiana, Massachusetts, Prince Edward's Island, and County Cork, Ireland. Biographical sketches of the performers, a list of sources and an index of tune titles conclude the book. The authentic tunes of the Bayard collection will be invaluable both to the folklorists and to composers, performers, or students of music who seek understanding of the American idiom. Notes following each of the transcriptions link the tunes to others of Anglo-Celtic provenance, as well as to continental European airs.
