Painter, musician, journalist, essayist, playwright, and composer, Alberto Savinio was one of the most gifted and singular Italian writers of the twentieth century. Italian critics rank him alongside Pirandello, Calvino and Sciascia, but he is hardly known to American readers. He was the younger brother of Giorgio De Chirico, and Andre Breton said that the whole Modernist enterprise might be found in the work of these two brothers.

Savinio composed five operas and more than forty books. A friend of Apollinaire, figures on the scene during Savinio’s artistic and literary career included Picasso, Cocteau, Max Jacob and Fernand Leger. As the translator says, “his writing, like his panting, moves easily from the everyday to the fantastic. Attempts to define it as ‘surrealist’ are too limiting. It is free in spirit, profoundly intelligent, and beautifully controlled in style.”

The stories collected in Signor Dido are his last works, one story being sent to its publisher only four days before the author’s death. And while this final collection was completed in 1952, it was not published in Italian until 1978. “Composed with an extreme economy of means, they are the summing up of a rich and complex life.... The stories contain haunting premonitions and at times piercing solitude, but they are all graced with Savinio’s high comic sense, his fine self-humor, and that stylistic irony which, as he once said, is both a mask for modesty and ‘a subtle way of insinuating oneself into the secret of things.’”

About the Author
Alberto Savinio (Andrea Francesco Alberto de Chirico) was born in Athens in 1891 and died in 1952.While still a teenager his musical compositions had drawn notice, he was a celebrated pianist, and his third opera, Perseus, had its premier at The Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1924. He wrote more than forty books including novels, criticism and memoirs. Childhood of Nivasio Dolcemare was translated into English by Richard Pevear and published in 1987.
Richard Pevear is one of the greatest translators of our time. Together with Larissa Volokhonsky, his wife, he has translated virtually the entire canon of major Russian writers, beginning with the award-winning Brothers Karamazov, all the rest of Dostoevsky's major fiction, and continuing with the work of Tolstoy, Gogol, Bulgakov, Tolstoy, Chekov, Turgenev and Pasternak.

Sympathy for the Signor

The short works included in this volume were first carried in an Italian newspaper between 1949 and 1952. They concern the politics of domesticity and the striving of Savinio's alter ego, Signor Dido, to surmount the quotidian.

The author portrays a family "united in love, and behind that veil, mute enemies on a silent battlefield." The role of the father in post war Italy is changing and he no longer receives the largest plate for dinner. In his home, Signor Dido "would like to speak of lofty and poetic things, above all to speak of himself and hear himself spoken of." Instead, he must be silent, his arguments not taken seriously and his manner consigned to "irreducible timidity." Dido seeks refuge but does not find it in memories, which bring shame and remorse, or in sleep, as he lies wide awake at 1 a.m. his arms spread wide in Christ-like repose.

In the world of Signor Dido, "the trivia of the daily life yield to the visionary; reality suddenly turns fantastic" according translator Richard Pevear. They include a dottore who plays silent music in a hidden house, an invalid engineer who waves frantically for assistance that never arrives, ghostly soldiers returning purloined works of art and families at silent war and peace.

Dido searches endlessly for sympathy from others and, failing that, for solitude. "Little by little, (he) manages to rid himself of all foreign elements. He finally comes back to being all himself. Happiness begins. His happiness. The purest happiness. The only happiness."

Savinio advises his readers to overcome the "prejudice of seriousness which spreads so much darkness over matters of culture and life in general." In this book, he treats of serious matters but retains self-humor and high comic sense, crafting short narratives characterized by stylistic irony. Using an "extreme economy of means," the author describe a rich and complex life, says Pevear in an introduction to Signor Dido. The result, though spare, is entertaining as well as revealing.

About the Author

Elayn Martin-Gay has taught mathematics at the University of New Orleans for more than 25 years. Her numerous teaching awards include the local University Alumni Association’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, and Outstanding Developmental Educator at University of New Orleans, presented by the Louisiana Association of Developmental Educators.

Prior to writing textbooks, Elayn Martin-Gay developed an acclaimed series of lecture videos to support developmental mathematics students. These highly successful videos originally served as the foundation materials for her texts. Today, the videos are specific to each book in her series. She has also created Chapter Test Prep Videos to help students during their most “teachable moment”–as they prepare for a test–along with Instructor-to-Instructor videos that provide teaching tips, hints, and suggestions for every developmental mathematics course, including basic mathematics, prealgebra, beginning algebra, and intermediate algebra.

Elayn is the author of 12 published textbooks and numerous multimedia interactive products, all specializing in developmental mathematics courses. An Excellent Work of Fiction on a Controversial Subject

This is the first book I read by Sheri S. Tepper, who has a written a great many books since her late-in-life entry into the world of authorship. This isn't her first work, but it is probably one of her most talked about. That's actually putting it tamely. Many people really argue about this book, feel deep seated insecurities about what others think of the book or embrace it with a little too much fervor.

Why?

Gate is essentially a post apocalyptic tale, with the fall several hundred years in the past. The world is lovely and quiet, with a slow rediscovery and recovery of technology. The world, at least as far as these folks reach, is based on widely spread walled towns. Where it gets tricky for folks is that these towns are inhabited only by women, their children and a few men who have undergone a complete separation from "normal" male life.

And what is normal male life in this new world? They live in garrisons, each protecting "their" town and women. They do lots of drilling, lots of yelling and male bonding and lots of big talking regarding their prowess. They interact with women personally only during scheduled free for alls, but the women seem very obliging in the matter. Every so often the men get word of some major insult from one town, or women relay, leader to leader, that there is some threat somewhere and a few towns' men march off in great honor to fight and come back far fewer in number.

Hmm...wonder why this makes male readers a bit uncomfortable at this point?

The main character is Stavia, though there are many other characters who are just as strong and vivid, and she essentially goes through her young life and into adulthood in this story. She is becoming...in all ways. She intuits and then discovers the world and what has happened within it as well as the secrets that only a very few know in Women's Country.

It is a difficult book in some respects. Mostly because it touches on some things, at various points, that many (perhaps even most) women feel deep down inside but go their entire lives never once speaking about to another soul. It touches also pretty deeply on how solutions aren't at all what they are sometimes cracked up to be.

Now, it isn't perfect. There are some resolutions that wouldn't be possible in our world and some mystical bits that always seem to wander in. All in all, it is very satisfying and one I'd want to keep to read again a few years later so I can refresh my enjoyment. It will certainly give you some pause to think.

And, for the guys; no, this isn't a man-hater book. It does put some issues on the table that are otherwise taboo though. I mean, we all know facts and numbers, but there is little alternative history to compare to. What can we point to as a truly woman dominated society to compare with our male dominated one to see, empirically, what is better? So, if you do read this, keep in mind this is a fiction writer with an interesting speculative slant on a story. It is certainly worth a read for anyone with an interest in speculative or alternative history fiction as well as post-apocalyptic fiction.

My Favoriate Book!! Five Stars!

I was so lucky to happen to come across The Gate to Women's country! From the moment I began to read it, it took off. Sheri S. Tepper's ideas are so original and her characters are so well developed you can not help but to keep reading. There are so many twists and turns throughout the book and the ending is jaw dropping. I've seen alot of bad reviews from men that are borderline hysterical, stating this book can "ruin the world". It's a work of fiction and it is excellent, it has anything one could wish for in a story, drama, love, war, lies, suspense and on and on. The only negative comment I would have is that I wish it was longer.

Read this one twice!

I don't want to reveal too much about this book, because one of the most rewarding things about it is watching the expertly crafted plot unfold, doling out tiny hints and clues, but never truly revealing everything until the very end.
This story takes place in three time frames. Stavia in the present, a woman and mother, forced to surrender her 15 year-old son to the warrior clan of men which claims most of the males of her society. Stavia in the far past, age 10, seeing her brother go to men's country and in the process, meeting a warrior of her own who makes her question everything she knows to be true. And last, Stavia as a young adult, compelled to break the rules of society for the warrior who has haunted her life.
There is a fourth portion of this book, a play which is enacted every year in "Women's County," a play which seems a bit obscure at first, but grows into a key to reveal all the books secrets.
My best advice is to read this book twice. I finished my first reading, turned back to page 1 and began again. The second time through, all the clues jumped out, screaming for notice. A lot of things I glossed over in the first reading became so VERY important. Most of all, the play takes on new meaning, revealing some things I would never have noticed without reading it a second time.
I give this my highest recommendation. Everyone should read this book!

Excellent treatments of feeding and reproduction

Excellent treatments of feeding and reproduction. Attention is focused on a few commercially valuable bivalves, (on which most experimental work is done). Half of the book is on fisheries and aquaculture, which is Gosling's interest, but not mine. Had I known this I would not have purchased the costly book. If your interests match hers, it would be worthwhile.
