This is a revelatory book about the culture of the Marsh Arabs in Iraq. The author travels with the famous expert, Wilfred Theisiger and gives the reader a deep understanding of why Iraq will resist any central government's attempt to form a cohesive central government. A classic!

The first work I have read by Gavin Maxwell, whom I always equated with Scotland and otters; in this account of his time spent with the Marsh Arabs of Iraq (1956), he tells of his first encounters with the animal, in the reedy waterways by the Tigris - and of his discovery of an otter species which was named after him.
But the main part of this work is of the place and the people, as he accompanies experienced adventurer, Wilfred Thesiger, in a reed canoe. staying in the reed homes of local sheikhs, he describes the villages, where each house is 'a tiny island of its own...we could see through their slit doors to firelit interiors where buffaloes shared their warmth with the human family. Not galleons perhaps, but Noah's Arks.'
We read of the huge bird life, the turtles, fish ...and huge numbers of wild pigs, the hunting of which occupies the locals - not for food, but to keep down the numbers of a fierce creature. And of local life - dances, disease, generosity and dishonesty...
Quite poetic at times, Maxwell describes a world which was to practically disappear under Saddam's rule, with the construction of canals - but is now being restored by ecologists.

Classic Travel Writing

I read Wilfred Thesiger's book about this trip first. That of course was a great travel/adventure tale, but Gavin Maxwell's book of the journey into the land of the Marsh Arabs is equally interesting, and I would rank it up there with the travel classics. Maxwell's book is also much funnier than Thesiger's more sober account of that trip. Maxwell has a wonderful eye for detail, and is able to successfully convey to the reader the feeling of what it was like to be among this most different culture.

VERY COMPREHENSIVE AND SPECIFICALLY DETAILED!!

Are you a practicing antenna engineer and researcher in the industry and academia? If you are, then this book is for you. Author/editor Satish K Sharma and editors Sudhakar Rao and Lotfollah Shafai, have done an outstanding job of managing and writing a book that provides practical applications and design information of reflector antennas that are used for several communications systems.

Authors Rao and Shafai, begin with a brief introduction of the history of reflector antennas and its basics. Next, authors Sudhakar Rao and C. Babu Ravipati, address different types of reflector antennas that are used for satellite communications, including an introduction to payload systems and an antenna farm. Then, authors Yoshio Inasawa, Michio Takikawa, Shin-ichi Yamamoto and Yoshihiko Konishi, provide past and recent developments on reflector antennas for terrestrial communications applications. In addition, authors G. Chattopadhyay, A. Freni, N. Llombart and A. Neto, describe the use of focusing and nonfocusing reflector systems for terahertz imaging applications. Author Sudhakar Rao, also discusses recent developments in the area of multiband reflector antennas and associated feed horns. Authors Paolo Focardi and Richard E. Hodges, continue with a discussion of reflector antennas that are used for remote sensing of the Earth and other bodies in the solar system, relevant sensor technologies to detect and classify objects by means of propagated electromagnetic radiation. It is good to finally get a book with most material on spacecraft communications antennas. I am especially grateful for the material on physical design of antennas, on testing, and on deployable reflectors, as I was already familiar with almost all of the MBA material from his authoritative papers.

About the Author
In 2007, Nikola Danaylov was a master's degree student in Political Science looking for an interesting topic to write his thesis on. Nikola was tired of WWI and WWII research papers and wanted to do something different, something that not everyone was familiar with, where he could dare to make a contribution. One day, as he was watching the news coming from Iraq and Afghanistan, Nikola decided to look into drone warfare. Doing research on military drones pushed him into the field of Artificial Intelligence and there he discovered Ray Kurzweil's seminal book, "The Singularity is Near." The very next book he read was Charlie Stross' science fiction novel, "Accelerando." In 2009, he completed his master's degree and entered the army of unemployed job seekers at the peak of the recession. "I stopped counting after I sent out 300 resumes - I got one interview which apparently didn't go well because they never called me back, Nikola remembers. "One of my applications went out to the first and only blog dedicated to the technological singularity - Singularity Hub. The Hub was looking to hire a staff writer and, given my education, past research and writing skills, I thought I made the best candidate you could get. I eagerly anticipated an email telling me how totally perfect I was for the job, but the email never came. So, after two weeks of waiting in vain, it slowly started to dawn on me that I wasn't getting that job either. Then, a crazy thought occurred to me: maybe, just maybe, I didn't need them. Perhaps there was some tiny chance I might be able to do it on my own. I could start my own Singularity website. I mean, how hard could it be?" The title says it all

This is an excellent read, coming at the questions of the "technological singularity" from a variety of different angles. Remarkably, the "conversations" are with some really high-level thinkers, yet are presented in a way that is readily accessible even if you've never given this stuff any serious thought before. And, rather than presenting a single, monolithic "this is what's coming" vision, these conversations offer a diversity of views, coming at the question from many different angles.

Whether we think about it consciously or not, we all know that technology is advancing and bringing us to a place where our tools are becoming something much more than "tools" have ever been before. Our smartphones, our laptops, the internet itself -- things which did not even exist, and which most of us would not have even imagined could exist, a few decades ago -- are already indispensable to our lives. And they have changed us. As our tools become smarter and smarter, maybe smarter than us ... how will they change our lives, and, more importantly, how will they change us? This book does not answer those questions. Instead, it provokes them.

The author presents a delightful variety of perspectives on just what that future may hold, and just what that future could mean to who and what we are. Heavy stuff, coming from heavy thinkers, but presented relatively lightly. You don't need to be any sort of expert to be able to follow the conversations. It's a lively and engaging read, provoking thoughts that you ask yourself why you didn't think them before.

I'd recommend this book to anyone who can remember a world before Facebook and who has ever wondered how if so much has changed in the near past, how much will change in the near future. This book also be a terrific gift for anyone with the slightest interest in what the future may hold ... from the serious techie to the casual sci-fi fan. Highly recommended.

The technological singularity, by one definition, is a singular, near-future phenomena in which the exponentially increasing pace of technological advancement will not be measured in functional human terms. Conversations with the Future is the compilation of some of Danaylov's most enlightening and provocative interviews about and related to the technological singularity. Topics range from industrial automation to artificial intelligence to radical life extension and much more. In my opinion, Danaylov is the best at what he does—asking the questions so that you may ponder and perhaps formulate your own answers. Highly recommended to everyone interested in the future.

Heavy duty inspiration

I have the print version which prompted me to also buy this audio version. While I could listen endlessly to Max McLean reading just about anything, I greatly appreciate how well he reads these prayers in a beautiful, sincere, and reverentially inspirational manner. This is quite the audio to listen to on the drive to church - or any time before preparing to worship The Almighty with humility and reverence.

The Superlative Narrative of a Christian Favorite!

The absolute best reading of this timeless book of prayer (Isaac Watts, Dr. Charles Spurgeon, Richard Baxter, John Bunyan, Richard Sibbs, and other great Puritans), narrated by the Christian actor himself, Max McLean. His rich, baritone British accent speaks volumes of what went into the writings of these blessed Saints. Each prayer is an absolute feast that wrenches the heart, brings incredible praise to the mind, settles the spirit, and makes us few searchers for the Truth completely satisfied. I only wish it wan't out of print, which goes to show us the state of man's heart in today's "Everything on Demand" culture. If you can find any copies of this resource, buy it at once as a rare treasure beholden to but a few. You will never be disappointed. You can listen to these discs 100 times over, and still receive multiple blessings from it.

it is a wonderful book to read

The Valley of Vision is a marvelous tool for those who have a deep and compelling interest in growing in their fellowship with the true and living God. It offers prayers which probe penetratingly into every area of our knowledge of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

As an evangelical Christian for 65 years, I highly commend it to those with an all-out commitment to the Lord. Of course, it is a wonderful book to read, but the outstanding reading voice of Max McLean makes it an excellent bedside book to hear as one begins or ends each day.

As an audio instrument for those who seek to hold fast in their Christian life in this increasingly perplexing and distressing world, I can think of few similar readings to be more highly praised.

The Book of the Bulldog

I thought the book was outdated and many of the pictures are in black and white. I found the book to have information on the care of the bullldog, showing the bulldog but once again alot of the information in outdated. I think the book spent alot of unnecessary time on the champion bulldog from different eras and it's owners. This is a book you may want to add to your bulldog library but I would not want it to be my primary book on the bulldog.
