Not As Satisfying But Still Worthwhile

Anything by Mary and Tom Poppendieck is recommended reading but I'm not quite as impressed this time around. To be sure, there is much we can learn here about the application of lean principles to project management and software development. The discussion of value demand vs. failure demand is particularly good. And I couldn't agree more with their assessment of targets and "goals gone wild." Our systems, as well as our people, are what they are; targets will not change their capabilities. We're more likely to produce distortion and cheating than improvement. And "relative goals can motivate competitors to sabotage each other's performance. Thus ranking performance relative to peers can be damaging...if reward systems are based on this ranking." Performance rewards should be "shared equally among all competitors." A number of themes span multiple frames--a weakness of the "frames" construct--and the authors revisit this one several times.

More lessons from Toyota--the darling of every lean study--are helpful even if quotes such as this one now ring hollow: "One of the fundamental elements of TPS [the Toyota Production System] that management must be fully committed to is the `customer first' philosophy."

Frame 6: Quality by Construction is generally helpful but this is where I first began to notice some incendiary rhetoric and straw-man argumentation against waterfall or "sequential" development. For example: "not trying to find [defects] until the end of development" demonstrates "the distorted logic of the sequential frame of reference." Later, in telling the fascinating story of the Empire State Building's construction: "They did not break down the job into tasks" and the project "was not framed by cost, schedule, and scope." Yet they did break down the job into "small batches" and the project was framed by a number of constraints including "$35 million of capital...and May 1, 1931." And "Let's be honest; customers do not need scope. They need to have business goals accomplished"--the definition of scope. And "I often wonder how companies can expect superior performance...when there is no one whose job it is to uncover the strengths of each person and match the job to the individual."

Some concepts advocated here, such as eliminating defects, change control, and work queues, are debatable and sometimes raise more questions than answers. On quality, for instance, the authors quote Edsger Dijkstra who says "effective programmers...should not waste their time debugging--they should not introduce bugs to start with." Bug-free programming is certainly possible but at what cost, even in a lean environment? And on eliminating work queues: "'But,' you protest, `our customers won't tolerate that!' Or `How will we learn what customers want if we turn down their requests?' Or `How will we keep track of what has been discarded?' Or `Won't customers simply keep their own queue?' Or `What do we do with the list we have now?' These are all good questions, and you should search for good answers." Such conclusions are not quite satisfactory. Nonetheless, this work will certainly force you to think and is, therefore, recommended reading.

lean - by frames of reference

Wow! I was blown away by how good it was. I expected it to be "light reading" as I'd read about many of the concepts elsewhere. Somehow the authors managed to present them all in a thought provoking way. Even the introduction had me scribbling in the margins. As a result, I only finished 5 chapters in a 6 hour flight. I promptly finished the remainder the next morning. A real page turner.

Each of the chapters follow the same format: detailed example of company applying concepts, 4 frames and brief portrait of how used. A frame is a point of view - like a camera frame. There were detailed examples throughout. Each chapter ends with questions to think about - these aren't classroom exercises - they really help. The frames really drew me in - each time I started the next one, I felt the mental shift.

I'm not sure what my favorite part of the book was - between the current examples (banking crisis, Captain Sully, Obama's website), historical ones (Empire State Building construction), clear diagrams, etc.

The beginning of the book really grabbed me. It explained why Southwest Airlines is so much more successful than the traditional airlines. The fact that I was on an airplane at the time helped, but the example stood on its own.

The fact that I didn't go more than 5 pages without writing a note or more than 1-2 pages without underlining something really speaks for itself. The book was great!

Not as good as their previous books

This book simply was not as good as Implementing Lean Software Development. I gave it three stars only because I feel it's a bit of a money grab. Same content, reorganized, new title, for no reason. I would tell my leaders to read Implementing Lean Software Development and to avoid this book.

A Synopsis of the PE books on the market

Having been through the CFA program, I have seen a lot of finance textbooks in my lifetime. This book is the best in its field. New to private equity, I purchased this book, Inside PE, King of Capital, Private Equity 4.0, Introduction to PE, Masters of PE and VC, Applied M&A.

If you were to only buy and read one, read this textbook, especially if you are an LP. It does go into detail with many GP case studies, but most the issues that will be dealt with by an LP are all covered.

Applied M&A, the one I haven't read, but very applicable for a GP analyst.

Masters: some fables from historic GP's. Good history if you have the time. Light reading.

Intro to PE: lots of facts and figures about the PE market as a whole, some very grainy history on PE.

PE 4.0: Read my review - don't waste your time.

King of Capital: lots of interesting history of the industry from the perspective of Blackstone. Gain insight into what makes PE tick, its cycles, and the politics inside a large PE firm. Also a light read.

Inside PE: By an LP, for an LP. A good starter book for an LP with little time. Discusses all the major points and spends a lot of time on how-to and issues with reporting on your PE portfolio.

To sum up: For an LP, read VC & PE (a case book), Inside PE, and some of the other light reads on the train for fun. Lastly, if you want some good red flags of the type of people you don't want to give your Foundation money to, read, "Why Smart Executives Fail".

About the Author
Joe R. Lansdale is the author of over thirty novels and numerous short stories. He has received the Edgar Award, eight Bram Stoker Awards, the Horror Writers Association Lifetime Achievement Award, and many, many others. His novella Bubba Ho-Tep was adapted to film by Don Coscarelli. He is writer-in-residence at Stephen F. Austin State University and lives in Nacogdoches, Texas, with his wife.

H & L Brothers Ride Again

While this Hap & Leonard tale maintains the series norm of being another thought provoking social commentary, written with Joe's unique southern dialogue, ripe with his special style of humor, I must say it fell a little short in both. Now understand that I am comparing "Rusty Puppy" to others in what I consider one of the premier series in down to earth, rip roaring, common man epics.

Short on the humor that usually has me in tears and near breathless, it still has more sharp witted cutting funnies than ninety percent of books purely devoted to such.

Noticeable was a tamer less violent plot. I hope this is not a trend.

Finally, as we have come to expect, it contains a well developed plot with a motley group of characters.

Nobody compares with the true Mojo storyteller Joe Lansdale. May Hap and Leonard ride on and on and on. Already craving the next!

Hap and Leonard are back and ready to rumble

I have been reading stories about Hap and Leonard for many years and I have enjoyed them all. This one is one of the best in the series. It hearkens back to the early days of the series and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The boys are a little older and may be slowing down a bit but they can still get it done better than anyone. The timing of this book release really whets my appetite for the 2nd season of the TV series on Sundance channel.

anytime you get a chance to read a Lansdale book your in for a treat! Especially when its a Hap and Leonard book. This one finds the duo looking into a murder of a guy from some dirty cops..... Has it all, great action, one liners and some great new characters. This series is one of my all time favorites, and it will be especially awesome if Lansdale brings back the 400 yr old vampire! Loved it and there is great potential in future story lines, could go in many directions.

The second time I read this book and it was still good. I remembered reading it and just loved the love triangle between the characters. They were hot and sort of realistic. It was enough of a story to leave you wanting more. I'm going to get more by this author.

About the Author
Joshua Miller worked as a social worker, group worker, family therapist, agency director and community organizer for twenty years in Seattle, London, Dublin and Western Massachusetts before becoming a professor of Social Work at Smith College, where he teaches antiracism courses and currently serves as the Chair of the Social Policy Sequence. Joshua continues to do antiracism work in agencies and communities across the United States and has published numerous articles about various aspects of racism and antiracism. He also specializes in disaster mental health and has responded to many disasters, including 9/11, the Asian Tsunami, and Hurricane Katrina. He is currently engaged in practice and research for a forthcoming book on culturally responsive disaster mental health in a global context.

Ann Marie Garran has been in practice in New York City since 1992. Her clinical work has been primarily with adolescents and their families, both in outpatient and school settings and has focused on trauma, and issues related to oppression and poverty. Currently, Ann Marie is Clinical Supervisor at the Hunter College Employee Assistance Program in New York, NY. Her primary areas of professional interest include issues of race and social work practice, integration of psychodynamic theory and clinical practice, adolescent mental health, and clinical supervision. She has done antiracism work in communities and agencies, and is a diversity consultant in both the non-profit and for-profit sectors. Ann Marie has been an adjunct instructor at Smith College School for Social Work since 1999, where she has taught antiracism courses as well as courses in psychological theory and in group theory and practice.

Great Book!

This is a very well written, clear and well organized book on the many issues that affect the helping professions in relation to institutionalized racism. I am a graduate clinical social work student and this was one of my favorite books this year. It is not whine-y, it is well researched, and it was a fascinating and sometimes amazing read. It was great to read and become informed about racism while working with people from many different backgrounds. Even though I was very well versed in the subject beforehand, the way the book presented up to date research and ideas made it an unexpectedly great read.

There is so much to say about this amazing book! I purchased it for a cultural competency course with MCU for my midwifery studies. It's a great book that teaches about white privilege, racism, and what professionals can do to work with a culturally diverse population.

Excellent, Concise, and Thorough!

This large format book reveiws basic metabolism in an easy to understand manner. Specific segments of the metabolic pathway are summarized within two pages. Each face-page gives an overview of the entire metabolic pathway, with an outline of the specific topic discussed within that section. Far easier to comprehend than the metabolic pathways as described in those well known Biochemistry tomes, where the entire metabolic pathway is spread over 100 or so pages!

great view of the big picture

Metabolism at a Glance helped me in an advanced metabolism class: it shows all the inter-relationships between the different metabolic pathways, and overall is very complete. I purchased it on recommendation by one of my professors. I imagine that this book will be helpful to anyone in fields such as nutrition, exercise physiology, biochemistry, and at the very least is a good companion to any graduate level biochemistry/physiology textbook or class. The text can be small despite the oversized nature of the book, but then again, there's not much that can be done to resolve that given the number of enzymes, substrates, etc. involved in these pathways. I highly recommend this book.

Essential if you are a visual learner

This book is saving me as I take my medical biochemistry class now. This book maps many of the pathways on one page (the book has large pages) so you can see how different pathways are interconnected and where in the cell various processes occur. I learn things visually and like to see the big picture. So, learning different pathways and parts of pathways spread on several lecture notes don't help me much as this book does. This book is a major reason why I have a solid A in the class so far. I highly recommend it for metabolic or medical biochemistry classes.
