Exhilarating and heart stopping

Uprising picks up right after Elyse and William escaped from The Council to go into hiding. As the last healer, the council members want Elyse. She is part of a prophecy meant to start a war amongst descendants and finally overthrow The Council to free their people from centuries of Opression. And even though she is now just starting to learn who and what she is, Elyse has made friends and allies willing to protect her and their families. In this next installment to her Children of the Gods series, Jessica Therrien brings readers romance, twist ladden turn, and heart stopping, edge-of-your-seat action.

I love Greek mythology based books. I think the Gods are some of the most fascinating mythological beings to grace the pages of our books and history. What Jessica Therrien has created with her Children of the Gods is a series sure to indulge all readers. Elyse, although she had been kept in the dark about her lineage for so long, is a strong, albeit sometimes stubborn and wreckless heroine. She is afraid, yet she pushes forward past her fears in order to embrace her new role as descendant. I really enjoyed watching her learn combat and seeing her take role as leader. There were plenty of moments of frustration where I would have strangled her, but she grows as the story progresses, and for me that was her saving grace.

The romance part of this story was done beautifully. But what I liked most was finding that it didn't completely override everything that was happening around the descendants. Yes, there are sweet moments with Elyse and William, but they weren't the complete focus. But Jessica Therrien threw me a curve ball with these two I was so not expecting... it's a love triangle of Epic Proportions. (And it's not my Alaximandros if you're curious ;)

William is as beautiful as ever, but I felt like he was dismissed one too many times, and Elyse keeping secrets did not sit well with me. I didn't like it at all, though I understand what she must have been going through. Especially because William was always so comforting and supportive, ready to protect her.

We see new descendants, both good and bad, but one in particular who caught my attention that seemed like he didn't quite belong on the side he chose to fight in. I still found him utterly entertaining though. Alaximandros, or Alex, became my new favorite descendant. He had such an attitude, but he wasn't afraid to speak his mind or walk on eggshells around Elyse, and I loved him more for it. Everyone seemed to want to keep her in this protective bubble, and I understand, but it was necessary for her to know what she'd be facing.

The first part of the book is non too eventful, but it quickly picks up as Elyse finds out about her best friend Anna and her daughter, Chloe, are taken hostage. Now Elyse must decide who to ally with and what price she's willing to pay to save not only her human friends, but save her people. One thing I never expected was the twist at the end. To say I am heartbroken is putting it mildly. But I loved Uprising from start to finish and I can't wait to see what's next for our Children of the Gods.

Exhilarating!

In book two of the Children of the Gods series we see Elyse’s character developing as she grows into her role as leader of the descendants. Elyse is the one foretold to save the descendants from centuries of oppression, and according to prophecy she will have a baby who will become the new oracle. But the Council, under the control of Christoph, wants the baby in order to maintain rule. Elyse begins to have prophetic nightmares and must make some difficult decisions and life-altering sacrifices for the good of the descendants.

Uprising is an exciting page-turner which grabs the reader from the beginning and never lets up. There are enough plot twists to keep readers sufficiently engaged throughout. About the time you think you’ve figured out what's going to happen, in comes another mind-blowing turn of events.

Author Jessica Therrien artfully depicts scenes and events throughout the book; in her description of the descendant’s annual celebration one can nearly smell the blossoms on the trees and hear the beating of the drums. This is an exhilarating read that will have your heart beating with anticipation.

Elyse has done everything she can to protect her friends from the council's reach.
Wow. OMG. Wow.
Absolutely fantastic read.

What a series.
I loved book 1.
This is even better.
What a mini series this would make.
Packed full of action.
Had me gripped from start to finish.
I loved the story and the characters.
Elyse and William are still my favourite characters.
I loved Alex, Kara, Chloe and Anna.
Can't wait for book 3.
This is a must read and I would highly recommend this book.
Definitely worth more than 5 *.

We see the open truck cab, the farm workers on the corner waiting for pick-up; we see the speaker returning west to find the long-abandoned story of the birthfather. There is no stable landscape here except the horizontal action of moving through. Landscape becomes story. In this extended tale of the idea of family, we find stand-ins for the father in the form of a hit man, Jim Morrison, and ultimately the unyielding road takes the place of the body. The Switching/Yard is at once the horizontal world of the birth table where babies are switched, the complex yard of the body where gender routinely shifts and switches, and the actual switching yard of the trains that run the inevitable tracks of this book.

About the Author

Jan Beatty is the author of three previous poetry collections: Red Sugar, Boneshaker, and Mad River, winner of the Agnes Lynch Starrett Poetry Prize. She is the recipient of the Creative Achievement Award in Literature from the Heinz Foundation, the Pablo Neruda Prize for Poetry, two fellowships from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, and inclusion in The Best American Poetry 2013, among other honors. Beatty is cohost and producer of Prosody, a weekly radio program featuring the work of national writers. She is the director of the creative writing program at Carlow University.

Not all that enjoyable

Jan Beatty is a good poet; I have other books with very amusing and well-written poems (she's a professor, after all). Each book I've bought has become more coarse, and this one is too much for me, coupled with the confusing and annoying out-of-context punctuation marks. This time I wasn't amused either.

Learning to draw cartoons is amatter of perspective

Alth0ugh the book assumes little knowledge of drawing, the beginners that are referred to are people who have a fair bit of experience in the world of faces. This is a great book for someone who is looking to understand the background of drawing a cartoon person and the perspectives to use. For a budding artist, the information is superb, but it does somewhat take the ability to draw at some relatively good level for granted.

This is not a drawing cartoons for dummies, it is much richer and packed with the tricks of perspective and drawing the human face and structure. If you want to understand the various parts of the drawing, feature by feature, this is the book to use. Each part of the face is highlighted and shown what is needed to draw it effectively. By putting it all together, a person with an aptitude for drawing will be able to produce competent cartoons and caricatures rapidly.

A quick course in cartooning

I have always wanted to learn to draw. I bought this because I thought cartoons would be a good place to start. This is a very good introduction into the world of cartoons with lots of illustrations that you can copy and try to reproduce. After trying this a little, I found that learning to draw, even cartoons, will take some time, but if you follow the directions in this book, you'll be on your way to being a cartoonist.
