Terrible editing, but great story

I had to pause and figure whether this should be a 3 or a 4 star review. I went with 4 stars purely for enjoyment of this story. I have read all four books so far, and find them immensely entertaining.

However. The editing is terrible. Really, just awful. There are SO many mistakes, typos, incorrect words, random useless commas, and so on. It's infuriating because it really detracts from a great book. All of the books had the same mistakes and I just want to SHAKE this author for not proofing this series better. Other than the editorial issues (which were truly overwhelming), I loved it.

The good: The main character is a calculated mix of traits: honorable yet savage, generous yet vengeful, respectful yet coarse. Most of the time you love him but sometimes you hate him. The battle scenes were well played out and the overall story arc is logical and enjoyable. It's action packed, and the shield wall battles were very easy to visualize. I really enjoyed the details about the era in general - their beliefs, their gods, how their halls are structured, the food they ate and the clothes they wore, etc. All of that was well done. It was easy to become completely immersed in the story and I read all four books in quick succession.

The bad: There were some strange inconsistencies throughout (especially this book #4), which I also chalk up to bad editing. The story is told in first person perspective. Yet there is a single random paragraph that observes from a third person perspective a scout, and his thoughts at the time of death. It was just weird. There is not a lot of sex in the books beyond the general pillaging and raping of village folk, but in this last book there were a few detailed sex scenes which just seemed out of place. I don't mind that kind of stuff, but it just didn't mesh with the rest of the series. The author's love of the word "careering" is really annoying. Yes, it's a real word - but I don't think it's actually meant to be used in all the situations where it appeared - I believe "careening" is the word that is more appropriate in some cases. At least switch it up! The misspellings were so frequent and repetitive (focussed, lead vs. led) that it seems less an issue of editing and more an issue of... the author just doesn't know better? I don't know but it was very distracting. There are a million more examples that I can't recall off the top of my head right now and they were the same mistakes in each of the four books in this series. Lastly, the ending was very abrupt. In the other three books, the endings were obviously setting you up for a different story line or direction, and the moment of culmination made total sense. In THIS book, it just... ended. In the middle of a conversation no less. There wasn't the same sense of an appropriate break in the story as with the other books. I hope the next book wraps up some loose threads as well, which I won't go into here due to spoilers.

All in all, someone is probably reading this review and wondering why I actually ended up giving four stars but really it's because I liked this series a lot, that's all. Just plain and simple good reading if you can get past all the editorial BS. If the author could get that part worked out in the next book, it will be top notch. One other suggestion if the author happens to read this: a glossary/pronunciation guide IN THE BEGINNING would be really helpful. Also a map.

A fair strong king wulfhere took his people across the whale roads to start a new kingdom and has to deal with all the ancient enmities of the tribes of Britain. A deadly enemy to have. The weahl do not know sheild walls and throw themselves bodily onto the slaughter field.

About the Author
Alex Bellos' bestselling popular math books have been translated into more than 20 languages. He writes about math for the Guardian and frequently speaks at conferences, in schools, and beyond. Bellos is also the coauthor of two math coloring books with Edmund Harriss and the inventor of LOOP, an elliptical pool table.

Coloring books aren't just for kids! (FYI: nearly identical to Bellos' other book)

Whoever said coloring books are for kids was dead wrong. This coloring book is amazing. Unfortunately it’s nearly identical to the other book by the same author, Snowflake Seashell Star: Colouring Adventures in Numberland. If you already have the other book you can skip this one as many of the designs are identical. If you’ve never seen either please read on.

This book has page after page of amazing designs and patterns that will keep you entertained and occupied for hours. The book also shows how to create your own patterns and designs and includes several geometric based games and activities.

The pictures range from fractals to repeating geometric shapes to organic designs like cells. It also includes images made of animals, knots, etc. The designs range from simple to incredibly intricate. It’s the perfect time to break out that huge set of colored pencils.

This is the perfect gift for anyone who likes to doodle or appreciates geometry and symmetry.

Fascinating and soothing mostly abstract patterns printed on one side. Markers will bleed through so use a paper behind. The markers may also hide the text description of the next pattern if the colors are dark-- If you like markers perhaps begin from the back of the book and work forward so you have the text while you are working on the pattern. The last chapter shows you how to create your own patterns.
I saw the fractal pattern and realized it looked like the aura I get when a migraine is coming on. I became absorbed trying to capture the feeling of pulsing colors. The patterns are so fundamental you can find what you need in them.

What a wonderful book! As a parent and math teacher, I recommend this book as a way of changing how we look at math. It shows the beauties of math--shape, symmetry, similarity--without resorting to difficult equations, while connecting these with the math behind the ideas if you are interested. I've gotten several of these books already...some for my classroom, some for my boys, and one for me :). I love watching the patterns change as you work through the picture; it is very meditative and calming and inspiring. Thank you Edmund and Alex!

Mastermind With A Heart of Gold

I've known Dr. V for over 21 Years and this book recaps what I've seen first hand. In 1993 she was introduced to me as a chiropractor who used effective and innovative techniques along with healthy eating, exercise and holistic medicine. Her work is both factual and scientific in addition to her truly being concerned about each and every patient. On a personal level She practiced what she preached both inside her practice and outside with friends and utmost with her family. She has single handily help literally hundreds of my friends and acquaintances with the steps she focuses on in this book.
I am truly appreciative that my father who was diagnosed 20 yrs ago with terminal colon cancer and given less than 2 months to live is cancer free to this day THANKS TO DR. V's program. Also my sister had breast cancer and followed this program and is cancer for 7 years now. Thank you for sharing Dr. V now millions more can be helped?

Very Interesting

First of all the Ebook is LONG. It took me quite some time to read through it all. There is a lot of very helpful information in the book for breast cancer and other cancers. What got me down was the chapter on how the environment, food emotions etc. can cause cancer. You CANNOT escape all the environmental issues. Sometimes you have no option but to use a cell phone, or sit in front of a computer etc. You can't always avoid "toxic food" if you go to team lunches or dinner dates.
You need to try and modify your diet and lifestyle. The book provides a lot of helpful information, but even so people who did everything "RIGHT", still succumbed to cancer. It's a dreadful disease. 'Nuff said.

I purchased some of the anti-cancer products, Doctor Desaulniers recommended, straight after reading the book (the tea and Broccoli products that she mentioned). I will also re-read certain chapters again at a later date.

Interestingly, Harris is not just focused on debunking religious faith, though he makes his compelling arguments with verve and intellectual clarity. The End of Faith is also a bit of a philosophical Swiss Army knife. Once he has presented his arguments on why, in an age of Weapons of Mass Destruction, belief is now a hazard of great proportions, he focuses on proposing alternate approaches to the mysteries of life. Harris recognizes the truth of the human condition, that we fear death, and we often crave "something more" we cannot easily define, and which is not met by accumulating more material possessions. But by attempting to provide the cure for the ills it defines, the book bites off a bit more than it can comfortably chew in its modest page count (however the rich Bibliography provides more than enough background for an intrigued reader to follow up for months on any particular strand of the author' musings.)

Harris' heart is not as much in the latter chapters, though, but in presenting his main premise. Simply stated, any belief system that speaks with assurance about the hereafter has the potential to place far less value on the here and now. In this sometimes simplistic and misguided book, Harris calls for the end of religious faith in the modern world. Not only does such faith lack a rational base, he argues, but even the urge for religious toleration allows a too-easy acceptance of the motives of religious fundamentalists. Religious faith, according to Harris, requires its adherents to cling irrationally to mythic stories of ideal paradisiacal worlds (heaven and hell) that provide alternatives to their own everyday worlds. Moreover, innumerable acts of violence, he argues, can be attributed to a religious faith that clings uncritically to one set of dogmas or another. Very simply, religion is a form of terrorism for Harris. Predictably, he argues that a rational and scientific view—one that relies on the power of empirical evidence to support knowledge and understanding—should replace religious faith. We no longer need gods to make laws for us when we can sensibly make them for ourselves. But Harris overstates his case by misunderstanding religious faith, as when he makes the audaciously naïve statement that "mysticism is a rational enterprise; religion is not." As William James ably demonstrated, mysticism is far from a rational enterprise, while religion might often require rationality in order to function properly. On balance, Harris's book generalizes so much about both religion and reason that it is ineffectual.

Lucid and well argued.

Sam Harris simply and systematically makes the case for Reason over irrational faith. That 10 years after he wrote the Afterward to the book the United States has placed a pair of men in office based almost solely on the content of their real and,in the case of Trump, alleged religious beliefs is truly frightening. I fear that Sam is correct in his assertion that our species may not survive its irrationality in a world with weapons that are capable of producing The End of All Days..........

Required reading for seekers and questioners of all stripes

How I wish that this book had been available 40 years ago when I was having doubts about my faith in middle school. To have known that there were so many others like myself who did not put constraints upon their questioning would have been so incredibly liberating and saved me from an additional 10 years of slipping, sliding and unguided pointless research. To be sure, the search continues, but on far sturdier ground.

It cannot be overstated the liberating effect of Harris' constant calling out of the incredulousness of the magical and completely unverifiable claims of millennia old religions. Also refreshing is to bring in some history about how those claims have been used to justify some of humanity's most problematic traits like racism, mob violence, misogyny and the like. He makes the important observation that in no other spheres of life do we rely on millennia old knowledge. To truly live as Jesus would have, try using 2000 year old medicine, or dress in the same cloth, or grow your food the same way, or travel the same way, (we could go on).

Once, in a family discussion (argument) about the merits of allowing the teaching of 'intelligent design' in public schools on the basis of being 'fair and balanced', I allowed that would be acceptable when Sunday schools, in the spirit of reciprocity, would be mandated to also teach evolution. I now have another book I'd like to bring to both classes - The End of Faith!! May I live so long to see the day (sigh).

In a different direction, an eye opener for me was Harris' pointed confrontation of the Islamic faith. On that score, he almost becomes an ally of my, mostly right-wing - gun friendly - soldiers for the Christian faith - friends and family. I wouldn't be surprised if some would complain by claiming that he is in some way possibly racially or tribally prejudiced, but it seems to me that this is simply going after the 'low hanging fruit' that is in our headlines almost daily. He makes a telling point that we don't see many Christian suicide bombers. And so, rather than relying on dusty history to make the point of how religious faith might have been abused in the, possibly irrelevant past, he brings it into the present day where it can't be as easily denied. (I wish he would have turned his sharp mind against the modern day faith healers like Benny Hinn and his ilk.)

A book I wish everyone would read--it could save the world [really].

It is great to see this book has sold and continues to sell many copies. It is vital information: the history of religious insanity, the current religious fanaticism that threatens to destroy civilization, rational warnings and workable suggestions to the wise, the way out of our self-made destructive traps, the nature of the mind, the way the brain works, the real nature of who and what we are i.e. Consciousness itself.

Buy it. Read it. Buy another copy and pass it on to your best friend [or your worst enemy]. The book is among my favorites to have and to read. Thanks, Sam Harris, for this treasure!

This book brings a fresh approach to the already strong group of comprehensive textbooks in general surgery. As its title states, it emphasizes the basic science underlying the practice of surgery and the evidence supporting clinical decisions. The book tells the reader not only how to perform surgery, but why. It is a textbook and not an atlas or history of surgery, but the authors do illustrate operations with clear-cut drawings, and they document important historical landmarks.

The first section, "Care of the Surgical Patient," consists of chapters on the science underlying the practice of surgery today. Shock, inflammation, nutrition, fluid and electrolyte balance, and other basic-science topics are comprehensively discussed by first-rate, mostly mid-career academic surgical scientists. Surgical science also appears in the clinically oriented sections of the book -- on gastrointestinal and abdominal disease, endocrine surgery, vascular surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, transplantation, and oncology. The sister fields of general surgery -- such as plastic surgery and pediatric surgery -- and the associated disciplines of orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, and other specialized fields are also well covered. The text is clearly written, and the chapters are well illustrated. There is also a unique feature: several hundred evidence-based tables. These tables allow the reader to reach conclusions on the basis of data rather than on the basis of individual authors' experience or opinions. Another feature I like is the accompanying CD-ROM (enclosed inside the back cover of the book). This disk contains all the references cited in the book and allows the reader to call up the desired reference and, when specific Internet connections are used, often the abstract and even the complete article as well.

At first, when reading this large book at home in an easy chair under a soft light, I found the type small and the weight of the book a burden. Later, in the bright light of my office and with the book resting on my desk, the legibility was fine and the weight not a problem.

Considering that the seven editors chose 130 authors to write the 93 chapters, there is some variability within the book. Overall, however, the book hangs together, with its strong basic-science orientation and its emphasis on evidence-based decision making. The vast amount of material included in the book makes it fairly priced at $119.

This book will appeal to general surgical residents and medical students. Chief residents in surgery preparing for their board examinations will find this book especially helpful, because the chapters deal in a comprehensive way with the nine major areas of general surgery identified by the American Board of Surgery. The practicing surgeon will also find the book valuable as a source of information for everyday practice and for help with unusual cases. As a senior academic surgeon, I found the chapters useful as I was preparing lectures in my own areas of surgical interest, in which I have been working for years.
