High-Vacuum Technology - A Practical guide

This is one of the VERY few books that I'd pay $150 for. If you're limited to only one Vacuum book in your life, this is the one to have. An interesting blend of easy-to-understand technician-level information combined with enough engineering data and formulae to keep even the most severe calculator-phile happy. Mr. Hablanian was formerly the Engineering Director for Varian and so is emminently qualified to write such a book. As is fitting for the price, the production values are excellent. Crisp photos and excellent graphics. I have been pleasantly surprised to not find a single mis-spelled word or bad grammar so far. This is the book I recommend to people who have just entered the vacuum field and need a comprehensive crash course in the technology.

This book was written by one of the most knowledgeable people on the planet in the field of high vacuum systems - Marsbed Hablanian. An M.I.T. grad, and pioneer in the vacuum field, Marsbed Hablanian literally wrote the book on vacuum theory.

His former employer, Varian Vacuum Systems, put his knowledge of vacuum systems to good use. If you have any questions about conductance, outgassing, continuum flow vs. molecular flow, turbomolecular pumps vs. diffusion pumps, calculating pump down time, or which type of vacuum seal or fixture to use - you need not look any further that this book.

As a researcher in the field of vacuum technology myself, I have found this book to be a wealth of knowledge and an extremely valuable reference. Marsbed Hablanian is also responsible for improving diffusion pump operation by creating the distinctive bulbous shape of oil based vacuum diffusion pumps.

This book is a must for any library or laboratory!

Di was born in A darburg, Germany, October 6, 1847. His father, the economist, Bryno Hildebrand, was forced b)- the revolution of 1848 to seek inS witzerland freedom from political persecution. Having reached school age, the son attended the gymnasium of Bern, but did not show much enthusiasm for the abstract studies there offered to him. In 1861 his father was called to the University of Jena. The young man now showed such distinctive signs of artistic ability that he was sent by his father toN uremberg, to take a course in the art school of that city. At the end of 1867 he left Germany for a prolonged stay in I taly. The influence of the masterpieces of art accumulated in that country proved to be infinitely more beneficial to his artistic development than the school instruction which he had practically out-grown when he entered the art school. In Rome Hildebrand became acquainted with Hans von Marees, whose independence of thought encouraged the younger artist to follow his own bent. After staying in Rome a year and a half Hildebrand returned toG ermany and busied himself for some time with sculpture in Berlin. Anton Chekhov (1860-1904) was a Russian physician and writer of short stories and plays, including the masterpieces: 'Uncle Vanya', 'The Seagull', and 'The Cherry Orchard'.

Ronald Wilks has translated many Russian works of literature including, for Penguin, those of Gorky, Sologub, Tolstoy, Pushkin, and Chekhov.

A superb translation

These stories translated in this volume by Ronald Wilks are really superb. When one compares the translation of "The Lady with the Dog" with the earlier translation by Constance Garnett, the differences are apparent. Please compare them. The Wilks translation is high quality beautiful English expression, it captures the mood and the ideas of Chekhov perfectly.

Literal translation?

I have no Russian and therefore cannot question Ronald Wilks' command of that language. However, when I compare his translation of this exchange with the Pevear-Volokhonsky translation, I do question his command of colloquial English -- or his dark sense of humor:

P-V translation:
"What time is it now?" My sister was worried. "We have to get back early, papa allowed me to visit my brother only till six o'clock."
"Ah, your papa again!" sighed the doctor.

Wilks translation:
"What's the time?" my sister asked anxiously. "We'll have to be back early. Papa said I could come and seem my brother, but only if I'm back by six, without fail."
"Oh, blow your papa!" the doctor sighed.
