About the Author
Ginger Alden is an actress and model, known for her role on the daytime soap opera Capitol. She was also featured in a number of television shows including Hollywood Beat and Life Goes On. A spokeswoman for the Claridge Hotel and Casino, Ginger also starred in more than 100 television commercials and had a successful modeling career for such products like Clairol, Vidal Sassoon, Maybelline, Aziza, Avon, and Viriginia Slims.

She gets a bad rap and I don't know why

She was a young girl when she got romantically involved with the much older Elvis. Elvis was immature and shouldn't have pursued someone so young. Don't get me wrong-I love Elvis!!! However, I'm no fool and he was flawed like all of us. I feel sad for Ginger because she was pretty much shut out after his death and treated badly by fans and people that were close to Elvis. Also, nasty things were said of her. Bottom line is Elvis DID give her a ring and she was in his bed when he died. He did have serious feelings for her. Those feelings were probably changing for both but she was still considered his girlfriend who was wearing his ring at the time he died. I believe Elvis DID promise to pay off her mother's house. Why not? He bought houses for his maid, childhood friends so why not believe this was his intention. Elvis just didn't put it in writing. Therefore, the Alden family got nowhere in the courtrooms. I like how Ginger didn't run anyone down in the book. She didn't speak negatively about Priscilla and I know Priscilla never spoke badly of Ginger. In Priscilla' s book she spoke of Ginger being so young and taking care of Elvis was too much of an expectation for a girl of her age. So there you go. Sadly, because Priscilla is Lisa's mother and the ex wife of Elvis, she comes off representing anything Elvis. They were divorced and Elvis had MANY girlfriends during and after the marriage. Vernon left Priscilla in charge after his death and like it or not, she has done a great job keeping his memory alive. Ginger, I'm glad you wrote this book and hope you make a lot of money. Why not? Priscilla, Ann Margaret, Elvis' maid, Larry Gellar. Joe Esposito , Jerry Shilling, the entire Memphis Mafia, Cybill Sheppard, Linda Thompson, Kathy Westmoreland, and the list goes on and on have all written books about Elvis. Seems to me she has been extremely silent over the years unlike the others that I have mentioned. She looks great. She doesn't look like an alien due to too much plastic surgery. She appears to be a smart cookie. Not a total phony like some I mentioned. She is still married to just one man and has a son she is very proud of. Ginger did well and without all of Elvis' money or using his name. If she sold some of the things Elvis gave her- who cares??? I heard Priscilla and Lisa Marie are selling Elvis' personal items. Lisa sold a huge portion of her portion in EPE. The rest are constantly giving interviews and writing books. Why judge? This is a nice book about a young girl who fell in love with an older man who happened to be Elvis and walked away with nothing but a car and some jewelry, was with him when he died and has done well with her life. Elvis is smiling down on her from heaven.

Truth is like the sun

I spent the past two days reading this book. I wasn't sure what to expect when I purchased it, but I felt it was important to read Ginger Alden's side to the story as I have always respected her as a person for being Elvis' last major romance and the last person to see him alive. I will admit, I was expecting it to be just another "Elvis book" telling us what happened and what didn't happen according to the author. I was proven otherwise. This book is superbly written. From the moment you begin reading, you are transported back in time and taken on a whirlwind journey. The writing is perfectly descriptive - not at all tedious to read or comprehend, but certainly not indifferent accounts of events as most other books on Elvis have been for me to read either, save for Larry Geller's "If I Can Dream" and a very few others.
Ginger Alden has managed to capture a perfect balance of being descriptive and yet "to-the-point" in her writing. I became absolutely transfixed by the magical world of Elvis Presley, an interesting and generous man with faults like you and me, but with an almost other-worldly presence that is punctuated by his strong Spirituality. The book made it wonderfully effortless for my mind to imagine seeing, hearing, feeling, smelling and even tasting Elvis' world - a world quite different to that of the everyday person, and not just because of the fact that this was the most famous man on the earth, but rather because Elvis was an incredibly unique soul. Ginger has succeeded in sweeping the reader into that world here in 2014, just as she was swept up into it herself in 1976. Most importantly, it reads like the truth. At no point did I feel I was reading a fabricated account of events, let alone a book of lies.
Some things that I wished had been addressed were not, such as the great amount of health problems that others have said were supposedly crippling Elvis almost completely in his final months, but I did not expect Ginger to go into every detail of Elvis Presley's private medical history - either this was simply good manners on her part, or those stories of Elvis being a slurring, tumbling, terminally ill cripple on his last legs have been fabricated by others. By the amount of energy and intellect Ginger describes Elvis as displaying in his final months, which is confirmed in my mind by Elvis' late 1976 performances and those pictures of an energetic and almost athletic Elvis taken in Hawaii in 1977, I would say that the latter is the case. "Crippled old Elvis" seems to be, for the most part, a fabrication to make certain individuals look good while making Elvis and those he truly loved and cared for look bad. This concept of the middle-aged Elvis Presley having such a zest for life does make Elvis' death seem more shocking, as his time with us was clearly not completed. It is sad that most of the things he planned on doing were left unfulfilled. Death truly has no mercy.
All in all, this is a fabulous read, but if you have any strong preconceived ideas about how you think things went on, this book will either turn those thoughts around, or your mind will fight against the information being presented to it. A lot of people seem to think they know the "gospel" of Elvis Presley's life and death. We are sadly seeing a lot of this sort of attitude with all this backlash, negative reviews and even personal attacks against the author and her family and friends. Anyway, I wish to conclude this review by saying a big thank you to Ginger Alden and everybody who contributed in some way to the book for this wonderful insight, and most of all, thank you to Elvis Aaron Presley for being the incredible human being that you were. We will always miss you.

Not writting for the purposes of sensationalism, and all the stronger a record because of it

I do not know how anyone who reads this book carefully can give it less than five stars. This book has long desparately needed to be written as a crucial monument to the history of Elvis' final year, but the emotional toll on Ginger was surely great. Ginger is very intelligent; she writes with sophistication and a good sense of what themes to revisit throughout the book, particularly Elvis' generosity and spiritual quest, and to lesser degrees her concerns for his health and behavior and her bridge from the world she grew up in to the world only Elvis could have lived in. Those of us who love Elvis, in all his otherworldliness and in all his humanity, can only be grateful for this very detailed chronicle of the final nine months of Elvis' life. As a husband, I know how I would react if my wife were to withhold things from me because she thought it was in my best interests, and Elvis understandably did not take this kindly from his 20-year-old love. It is sad to me to know that so many of the memories people share about Graceland happened in the dining room, but Ginger had none of those things as the middle-aged Elvis retreated most all the time to his bedroom. Yet who could know what it was like to be in the body of someone who had accomplished every conceivable thing an entertainer could dream of doing, and who, while adoring his fans, was on a quest for something that could take him to a still higher plane. One can only wonder, but Ginger was the person who was there. Perhaps the unspoken hero of the book is Ginger's husband, who must be extraordinariliy gracious to allow the king of rock and roll to remain such a large part of his wife's memory and consciousness.
It is impossible to tell her story honestly and completely without Ginger speaking of other persons around Elvis who befriended her--or not. It is painful for an Elvis fan to read these things. I am not blaming Ginger or anyone else. But I will say that she does not go out of her way to put down persons, especially in the highly emotionally charged issue of the house that her mother was told by Elvis he would pay off (which Vernon admitted) but that Elvis' lawyer had not taken care of as he promised at the time of Elvis' death. Other persons have taken shots at the Alden family over this, and while in hindsight everyone would have probably handled something differently over this, it frankly seems incomprehensible to me even after reading the book why the house wasn't paid like Elvis wanted and that Ginger's mom, injured and divorced, really needed. If Vernon was executor of Elvis' estate, why did he tell Ginger he had lost power of attorney rights when Elvis died? Ginger speaks only respectfully of Vernon, and he apparently developed a special appreciation for her too, but I still don't understand exactly how he didn't make sure the Alden mortgage was paid when he acknowledged Elvis had verbally promised multiple times to do so and still made sure Ginger's mom did get the swimming pool Elvis promised her. Ginger's hesitance to give all the details here, which is a rarity in the book, reinforces to me that she has genuinely not wanted to milk the Presley estate for money all these years. I think she wanted to take care of Elvis, her mom and family, in the best way she knew how, and that this remains her focus in writing the book, with taking care of fans' interest in historical record now added.
