AMAZING!!!!!
By emmee
I am in love with this book. I am a student taking photography classes online. Currently, I am taking a still life class. I asked my instructor if he could recommend a book to me that would deepen my study of light and commercial photography. He recommended this book. What was so funny was that I had ordered the book just prior to even asking him to recommend something.

I have had the book for two weeks now and I am in love! It The book is easy to understand and you are able to put the information into immediate practice. I have seen an improvement in my images in just two weeks. One of the things I was looking for was an improvement in my overall workflow when it comes to approaching a subject and understand how to build a lighting scenario. I have slowed down my process much more and really analyze my subject and the my lighting setup one light at a time before ever tripping the shutter!

I would say that this book is for someone who is wanting to pursue a career in photography and wanting to become a professional. The authors make no bones about who the target audience is.

Basically, this is a must have if you are looking to turn pro! Highly recommended!

"Light Right," Review

"Light Right," by Joe Lavine and Brad Bartholomew is an essential primer for those aspiring photographers who's ambition is to enter the contemporary commercial world. Rightly focused on studio lighting, the skill that separates those who make images from those who take images, "Light Right," also covers a number of professional subjects from digital camera technique to getting business and creating a working relationship with art directors.

Having both taught in a commercial photography program and a commercial photography studio for over 20 years, I know this is a great text to use in lighting classes and one students will keep for when they open their own businesses. Students were also delighted at the book's readability and affordability. "Light Right," answers so many of the questions young photographers have. The images in the book are both illustrative and inspirational, the interviews with a wide range of commercial photographers, insightful.

Light Right should soon become the new standard text for learning how to create and maintain a successful photographic life.
By Mark Malloy
Light Right is an exceptional resource and teaching tool, among the best I've seen in the last 15 years. At this time, when roles and expectations are so much in flux, it is often difficult for students of photography to see their way forward. Thankfully, Joe Lavine and Brad Bartholomew have produced a comprehensive guide that, in an easily understandable way, can aid anyone wishing to learn what is most important in building a sustainable photographic life.

Covering the business of photography from soup to nuts, this book explains, in simple terms, how to build success in this field; it's all about solving the problem. In creating a photograph, you seek to resolve the problem of expressing an idea to your audience. The photographer does this by first listening to the desired audience, and crafting a visual response intended to send the desired message. That task starts not with an object, but a simple truth; that lighting, and success, is a building process.

Light Right isn't simply about how to create a well-lit image, but how to respond to the needs of your audience, be they galleries or ad agencies, buyers of fine art or buyers of art for commerce. As this book lays out, creating the image is only a small fraction of what goes into being a successful photographer. Building an audience is as important as building a successful image, and staying true to yourself is just as important as fulfilling your audiences expectations.

To be a true success, one must begin by looking inward, by committing yourself to a code of ethics, and letting that code be your guide as you navigate through the wilderness of expectations and outcomes. Few books in any field cover, in such a simple and easily understandable way, the relationship between the creative process and the future use of such creations. Thankfully for student and working photographers alike, Joe Lavine and Brad Bartholomew have created a book that easily and successfully lays out the tools and techniques necessary for potential success in today's rapidly changing business and creative landscape.

Light Right should soon become the new standard text for learning how to create and maintain a successful photographic life.
