From the Back Cover

Standing waist deep in a stream or a lake for hours on end provides plenty of time for reflection and aimless musings. Do trout sleep? And if so, when? And how does that affect their feeding patterns? Is there any truth to the notion that a rising or falling barometer can affect feeding habits? How does refraction influence a fish’s approach to a surface fly, human shadow, or false cast? How much do fish need to eat, and how does their feeding behavior change as the water temperature rises or falls? How long do trout live, and under what conditions will they grow the largest?

Disappointing
By M. Schwartz
I had high hopes for a book like this and kept waiting for it to meet my expectations. However, it never made it. There are 11 chapters, and only one chapter actually covers what trout see and how it relates to fishing. The rest of the chapters are rehashed material that appear to have been included to make a book out of a collection of filler, packaged under a catchy title. I was hoping for an insightful book in the vein of Ralph Cutter's excellent underwater observations and photos of trout, aquatic prey, and their behavior. There are in fact very few underwater photos at all in this book and none of the photos go beyond vanilla shots of trout holding in place or being released. There are zero underwater pictures of insects or prey fish, and I only found one photo of what appears to be a trout feeding some distance away. The author and editors should be ashamed of showing their face at any fishing shows after marketing an embarrassment of a book like this. I gave it 2 stars instead of one because, mixed in with the fluff, there is the occasional interesting or entertaining tidbit (not enough to make the book worth buying, but saved it from the 1-star gulag). If you want to get better material on the subject of trout and their underwater feeding behavior, the following are excellent resources.

1) All of Ralph Cutter's books and videos
2) The Underwater World of Trout videos, by Wendell Ozefovich
3) The Trout and the Fly by Clarke and Goddard
4) What Trout Want, by Bob Wyatt (excellent book and contains great insights and photos of emerging insects).

Shameful...
By Stephen Carl
Wouldn't it be nice if someday, someone would publish a book about "What a Trout Sees." It would have underwater photos of the shore from a fish's point of view. It would show a dry fly above, from a trout's point of view. It would show nymphs as a fish sees them. In other words, it would be What a Trout Sees. Sadly, this is not that book.
What this is, is a self-agrandizing commentary of all the wonderful people the author knows, all the wonderful fishing trips he's taken and all the wonderful flies he likes. To this soup, he adds his own theories as though they were, in fact, facts — which they are not.
Frankly, this author never gets around to What a Trout Sees. He's too self-involved and too aware of his own importance to the sport. This book is nothing short of shameful. In any other context it would be grounds for a lawsuit for not delivering what was advertised. The folks that wrote the glowing forward and other recommendations — no doubt based on their relationship to the author, rather than the content of the book — should be ashamed of themselves.

What were they thinking?
By Catskills Angler
Did the author have any idea of his audience? Did the editor even read the text? And how could the publisher have thought this worthy of publication?

I forced myself to read the whole thing, in hopes of finding something useful. But there's no there there. I found not a single insight that will make anyone a better angler. At best, this is a rehash of trout-fishing truisms, except that they're often mangled in the repetition. The title suggests that the book will be about trout vision, but when Mueller actually gets to what a trout sees above and below the surface, he's both superficial and wrong. (Trout do not, as he asserts, see more above the surface when they're closer to it; the opposite is true.)

And the writing is over-caffeinated, to put it mildly. This was seemingly dashed off without any thought given to communication, let alone precision, and with no time or effort given to revision. Nearly every sentence is too long, too many paragraphs lack coherence or are filled with irrelevancies, and there's no unifying concept to the book, or even to the individual chapters. The author is in love with his own voice, and consequently disdainful of his readers.

It's scary to think that Mueller is himself an editor of an angling magazine.

If you want to learn something about trout behavior and something really useful about trout fishing, read Bob Wyatt's What Trout Want, which was published at about the same time. That's a great book; this one is terrible. One star is one too many.
